Simulation on strain gauge sensors

Hello there,

I am wondering whether is possible to simulate strain gauge sensors in Fusion 360. (if so how would I approach that?). From what I understand now, the simulation in Fusion 360 can give magnitude point strain using a probe. I am wondering that says I have the datasheet for commercial strain gauge sensors, (with info. on the resistance values & the strain), how should I relate the strain number in the simulation to the commercial sensors info (particularly, the resistance)?

Thanks so much for the help!

Hi @Anonymous

I may not be understanding what you are trying to do. Are you trying to design a strain gauge? Or do you just want to know how to correlate the strain result from a simulation with the strain reading from the gauge? Or something else?

Perhaps you can make up a hypothetical calculation of what you want to do. For example, a beam in bending produces a strain of 0.001 on the surface, and from this you want to calculate . . . . ?

I think the OP aims at correlation between stress/strain values from FEM analysis and strain gauge measurements. I.E. how to get from simulation results to real-world strain at the place a strain gauge is applied, in order to predict or verify the measured value.

A typical use case when designing sensors is "how much stronger/weaker do I have to make this part of the sensor body in order to get some strain value (in the range I can measure) for different forces" or "how much signal will I get from the strain gauge when applying this force".
