Orbit and pan keyboard shortcuts?

I'm transitioning from OnShape where a right click was always mapped to orbit and a pan was a contr-rmb. While the expanded toolset of fusion360 is great so far I'm finding the basic navigation controls completely maddening. I simply don't have a middle mouse button and don't ever intend to (using a magic mouse). Why isn't there at least a simple keyboard modifier + right click option to trigger orbit and pan? Having to click it manually each time and then hit escape to switch it off is severely hampering my efficiency. Is there any way short of buying a 3 button mouse (not happening) to make basic navigation usable?

@jlabscreative,

Welcome!

You *might* be able to set up app-specific actions in your operating system preferences.  I do not believe that Fusion offers this option at this time.  You can create an IdeaStation post to suggest the feature.

If you use OSX, there are gestures that you can use on the trackpad that will do what you are asking.

That said, if you intend to do any amount of CAD in any program, I strongly suggest that you reconsider your position.  You will find your productivity inhibited in most packages (Fusion included).  I would say that a three-button, scroll wheel mouse is a tool that is as necessary to CADer as a soldering iron is to an electrical engineer or a screwdriver is to a mechanic.  (Mind that these are my opinions.)

Hi @jlabscreative,

Thanks for posting! Fusion currently has 4 settings for navigation options, which you can find under Preferences. In your case I think the Inventor controls will be your best bet:

  • Orbit = F2 + left mouse
  • Zoom = F3 + left mouse
  • Pan = F4 + left mouse

Does that work for you?

AH yes! That works! I do think function keys are a bit of an odd choice (especially on mac since new macbooks don't have them) but it at least gets me out of clicking the icons and then hitting escape constantly (new macs also lack esc key, much to my dismay). At any rate it would be nice to have a Ctrl/opt/command alternative that doesn't require the function keys to work.

Thanks

Doesn't work for me. Not being able to emulate mouse with hotkeys is ridiculous.

This doesn't work for me either. Is it supposed to be broken?

How does one find what those 2-finger gestures are on the track pad?

Do they exist in Windows?

i've been searching for gesture-based stuff online but have not found the list of said gestures.

It's not working for me. I have a mouse and a laptop with F2 F3 and F4 keys, but I press function key and left mouse click and nothing happens.

I wish I could have just two custom shortcuts

H for Hand so I can Pan around instead of having to click the Hand icon. I use S and pick a circle if I want a circle. Quickly changing movement tools is more important to me.

O for Orbit so I can orbit around. I haven't even figured out how to do this other than the XYZ box in the top right corner. Is it possible to orbit using my mouse in my work area or do I have to keep moving back and forth to the orbit box?

I was able to set these shortcuts in Sketchup. Why can't Fusion 360 support custom shortcuts? Seems very shortsighted if you're attracting customers away from super intuitive tools like Sketchup.

"I simply don't have a middle mouse button and don't ever intend to-"

Fusion rewards flexibility, punishes rigidity with frustration.   The above statement does not bode well.

You may need to enable the Function keys

How do you do that on a Mac? I do know how to configure keyboard shortcuts, but since this is specific to the software, I'm sort of lost here.

How does one configure the wheel button to work with Fusion 360 on Mac?
The Middle mouse button doesn't work on Fusion 360 for Mac OS in order to be able to pan or orbit, it only zooms in or out.

By the way, I happen to use a normal Logitech mouse that does have a third middle scroll button.

So basically, none of the function key alternatives for not having the scroll mouse button work are actually functioning for me:

Orbit = F2 + left mouse button

Zoom = F3 + left mouse button

Pan = F4 + left mouse button

But I'm sure that can be solved.

Just found out my mouse's middle button is dead. This helped me immensely. Thanks!

Hello,

I am new to Fusion 360 and appear to be one of many who have thoughts regarding custom keystrokes for shortcuts. My issue is with the Canvas Selection group. Fusion 360 assigns mouse buttons for the shortcut. To me the operative part of shortcut is "short". For often used commands like orbit I can use one mouse in both Inventor and Solidworks. I can do this using Logitech application specific settings. Unfortunately Logitech only takes keystroke assignments, no mouse button assignments. I agree with many of the other users in this and similar threads that any new platform should have customization made easy and to work with industry standard accessories like Logitech products. Productivity has huge value for a CAD program. Please allow the user to assign a keystroke if they cannot use a mouse button to to make life easier.

Thank you

"Fusion rewards flexibility, punishes rigidity with frustration." Rewarding flexibility without entertaining it is essentially demanding conformance - that's not very flexible - so the next version of Fusion is tipped to self flagellate to cope with its own self-inflicted frustration... correct, this is ludicrous.

The problem with using Function keys for Pan and Zoom for Laptops without a middle mouse button is that (a) the function keys are at the top of the keyboard and (b) most laptops (Mac and Windows) don't have dedicated function keys either..  By the time one has found the fn key, then the f4 key, clicked and dragged, all in the required order, clicking the hand icon would have been faster and easier.

Why not just have something extraordinarily simple like Alt+drag orbits, Shift+drag pans? That would be a short-cut and it would work on all keyboard platforms.

I've been learning and using F360 and while I am a Mac user -- a lot of the responses here make a few general assumptions.  For example:  Not all Mac's have trackpads -- my MacBook Pro does -- but my iMac has a regular Mac OS X Keyboard and Logitech mouse.

Using the SHIFT+MIDDLE button while on my iMac does work, but it is painful.  I'd prefer to use right click.  I use the right-click context menu a lot less than I do orbit.  I'm constantly orbiting -- orbiting while I'm thinking, or checking out a particular fitting...I orbit in my chair in fact. 🙂

Please let us reassign the simple mouse clicks in Fusion.

BTW -- the new Tabbed menu UI looks amazing.  Having to relearn a few locations of items, but works well.

Totally agree. Very short sighted to not make Fusion more flexible for Mac's, especially considering how Mac's are considered to be a very creative environment.

Using Function keys + mouse doesn't work on my system, and I don't want to switch to my Logitech mouse, I like my magic mouse. Panning and orbiting work great with my system in Blender, wish it worked as well in Fusion. ESPECIALLY as being able to pan and rotate is such a critical part of building a 3D model, it should be intuitive in every system. You shouldn't have to contort your left hand into an awkward position and coordinate that with your right hand in order to do something you're going to do 1000 times a day.

It's one thing to say, 'Fusion rewards flexibility, punishes rigidity with frustration', but frustration in a tool leads one to go and find another tool. And there are 100s of tools out there to pick from. I'm going to press on with Fusion and see if I can work around this lack of flexibility. But if it becomes too frustrating, well, Blender is working well enough, is free, and the pan and rotate are very intuitive.

Good news!!!!

Orbit on right-click mouse is offered in latest release.

Sadly, being on the Mac you have to wait Apple App Store approval to get the latest software.

Thank you team for giving us a new option.
