How to animate gears?

Anonymous

In this situation I have a gear revoloving with a cylinder that has a key and key slot, with a washer behind it all. I would like them all to rotate. Should a make a rigid group with the key, cylinder, and washer, and then revolove them with the gear? I'm new to Animation so I may be completely off, but any advice or solutions would really help

Attached is an awesome sample file I recieved from @NicolasXu. Using Motion Links to set up the gear ratios, you will be able to do a motion study with realistiic motion.

I think the Rigid Group is the way to go with the key, washer and gear. Check the below Screencast for a preview and the attached file for reference.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Would I need to make contact sets between the gear teeth?

There were no contact sets used in this design. You may be able to use a contact set to get the initial meshed position. If the gear ratios are set up correctly, the teeth should mesh nicely.

Thanks,

How to animate gear assembly by giving it a specific speed or rpm??

You do not have control over the speed of any animation, in the design environment, with Fusion 360.  You can add Motion Links to define relationship speed between two joints but not specify the speed of an animated joint.

I know you cannot do it in the Design Environment and I am pretty sure you cannot do it in the Animation Environment either but I have not extensively tested it.

You can enter RPM for gears in the Dynamic Simulation environment of Autodesk Inventor Professional.  You can enter a constant value RPM or you can use the Input Grapher to speed up, slow down, dwell or reverse using any RPM curve or motion law.
