How do I print out a sketch?

Hi all,

What's the best way to go about printing out a sketch on a regular inkjet printer to scale?

  1. Extrude, patch, or do something to the sketch to make 3D geometry
  2. Create a 2D drawing of this with a 1:1 scale
  3. Print the drawing and make sure that you do not have any "fit" settings that will compromise the scale.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks,

Nathan-

I'd just like to point out that having to go through such a convoluted process, in order to get something as basic as a sketch out of a program, is ridiculous.

I still don't see the print button, is there one?

Nope, no print button. You have to export first.  Isn't that dandy?

Luke- the best way for me is to select the sketch from the browser and export as dxf.  Then open in something else to do the printing.

Hm. Any chance of adding a print feature in the future?

Thanks for the heads up laughingcreek. Trying to keep things Fusion if I can, even if it's a convoluted process. 😛

And yes, I do agree it is very ridiculous. Lots of things about Fusion are ridiculous. But the major items are rock solid. Except for stability... Lol. 🙂

If you want your sketch to be to scale, then as mentioned previously you can export to DXF, I agree this is not ideal.

You can Capture the sketch but the downside to this, is that it is not to scale.

I will log the issue with development on your behalf.

Jon.

Thanks Jon, is there any way for me to file bugs or feature requests through Fusion or Screencast? I don't mean to clutter the forums with lots of little bug reports or feature requests.

OK, I still do not understand what to do with the file once it's exported as a DXF.  Are you saying I have to import the DXF into a 2nd party software just to print a drawing from Fusion?

It would also be very nice if the print would include the dimensions, if you add any. So you can take a printout to your manual machining equipment.

I think that would be great, but also a good reason to allow us to import 2d geometry into Drawings.

Hi Luke,

Any bugs should be logged by Product Support but for Feature Enhancement you can log your ideas on the Idea Station forum page.

Jon.

I have tried a couple of 2nd party programs for printing drawings from DXF and each one has quirks and problems.

Why is the print button missing from Fusion?  Will one be added?

I have logged the issue with development.

No decision has been made yet.

How can printing not be included?

What good is a drawing if you can't print or plot it to scale?  Jumping through hoops to use a non integrated, second party software just to print is ridiculous.

It seems like Autodesk is getting too caught up in the whole digital cloud scene, and forgetting about guys who design and machine in a job shop.

Yep, they are so enamoured with the idea of having a fully cloud based CAD system that they are forgetting who uses CAD... except for the maker community!

The process for printing a drawing is to output as a pdf and then print from the pdf.  To make it to a 1:1 scale make sure the views you create on the drawing are 1:1 and then print to scale from the pdf.  A .dxf file is typically used for cutting 2D parts from sheets of materal.

Could you recommend a program that will plot  D-size drawings that will work with multiple scale factors?
