Autosave not working

Auto save isn't working anymore, who knows why.  I have multiple failures to autosave.  It is set on 5 minutes, but it seems random now.

This used to work.

This is why we need a beta program.

As long as F360 randomly crashes with no crash window, we really need a beta program, and a working autosave.

One thing to note with Autosave:  It will not run if you have a command active.  This is because Autosave itself is a command, and would require the current command to exit in order to run.  So, if you are in a command that you commonly keep active for long periods of time (Edit Form in the Sculpt workspace, in my case) Autosave will not fire.  You should get a warning message in that case, however.  I'm not aware of any other failures in Autosave.  If you can provide any other info, it would be helpful.

You'll have to tell me what I need to give you, I haven't seen any warning.  I have given all the pertinent details that I know, but I am not the programmer.

I have had two windows open with unsaved content when fusion crashed, and the last autosave content on both was over an hour old.

Right now I have two unsaved items, and the only content I see is an hour old in C:\Users\Erik\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\2Q7TJA5HGV9Z\CrashRecovery

Thanks.  The most important, bit, I think, are the "diagnostic log files".  Use this command to zip them all up, and either attach them here, or send me a private message with them attached.  That will at least give us a clue as to whether the autosave process tried to run and failed, or did not even try to run:

log files.png

Also, if you can include a screenshot of your preferences from the "general" tab would be helpful as well:

preferences.png

thanks,

Jeff

Thank you for sharing the log files.  We've been over them, and it appears as if auto-save is working as we expect it to.  I took a close look at the log file for your last session on Jan 11, from 11:26 to 17:19.  The distilled sequence of events is:

- 11:27 - opened the model "TrashCap More holes v26"
- 11:31 - auto-saved "TrashCap More holes v26" and "Middle (v35~recovered)"
the second is an earlier auto-saved file (from its name)
- 11:35, 11:41, 11:46, 11:51 - auto-save fired and found no changes
- 11:53 - "Middle v36" was saved
this should have converted the recovered file to a "real" file
- 11:56 and 11:57 - "Only top level assembly needs to be autosaved and its disabled for autosave Middle v36"
- 11:58 - auto-saved "Middle v36"
-  12:03, 12:08, nothing to auto-save

- 12:13 - "Only top level assembly needs to be autosaved and its disabled for autosave Middle v36"
- 12:14 - saved "Middle v36"
- 12:20 - save "Middle" v37 and "TrashCap Mode holes" v27
- 12:24, 12:29, 12:34, 12:39, 12:44, 12:49, 12:59, 13:04, 13:14 - nothing to auto-save
- 13:19 - auto-saved "Middle v37"
- 13:19 - "Auto-save option is temporarily disabled, probably because some edit command is running"
- 13:20, 13:25, 13:30, 13:35, 13:40, 13:45, 13:50, 13:55, 14:00, 14:05, 14:10 - nothing to auto-save
- 14:15 - auto-save "Middle v37"
- 14:20, 14:25, 14:30, 14:35, 14:40, 14:45, 14:50, 14:55, 15:00, 15:05, 15:10, 15:15, 15:20, 15:25, 15:30, 15:35, 15:40, 15:45, 15:50 - nothing to auto-save
- 15:51 - saved "Middle" v38
- 15:55, 16:00, 16:05, 16:10, 16:15, 16:20, - nothing to auto-save
- 16:25 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:25 - nothing to auto-save
- 16:30, 16:31, 16:33 - "Only top level assembly needs to be autosaved and its disabled for autosave Middle v38"
- 16:34 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:34 - nothing to auto-save
- 16:39 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:39 - nothing to auto-save
- 16:44 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:44 - nothing to auto-save
- 16:49 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:49 - nothing to auto-save
- 16:54 - auto-saved "Middle v38"
- 16:54, 16:59, 17:04, 17:09, 17:14, 17:19 - nothing to auto-save

The message that say "Only top level assembly needs to be autosaved and its disabled for autosave" are the scenarios I described at first - if an edit command is running, autosave won't run.  If that happens for 15 minutes in a row, you will get prompted that auto-save has not happened for your design.  There are a few of those in this session, but there are also a lot of auto-saves happening - about 10 during that 6 hour period, and lots of times where no auto-save was needed.

If you see a specific case where it looks like an autosave has not happened for a session, send us the log files again, and maybe some details about while design (by name) was not auto-saved, we can go through the logs again and see if we can find something.

Perhaps you need to look at the threshold rather than the event. I just
know for sure that when I came back at 1030 or 1100 eastern time I had to
redo cam related stuff that hadn't autosaved.

OK, that is more helpful information, thanks.  So, I was looking at the wrong log file, then.  I needed to look at the one that the one that ended about 10:30 or 11:00 AM on Jan 11, so I did take a look.  Here is a very condensed look at the open, save, and auto-save operations.  I did not see any big gap in auto-saves in there.  There were a few periods where auto-save was blocked because a command was in progress, but they were early on in the process.

The next time you see this happen, where you have lost work for more than 5 mins, could I ask you to do the following?

  • note the design name where the lost work occurs
  • also note the nature of the lost work.  You said you lost "cam related stuff".  If we can have more info about what is lost, that will help us track down what might be a problem
  • immediately grab the log files as you did before, and post them to the forum

thanks,

Jeff
