I know there is no good way to space plan in formit, but I saw a way to essentially use a name as a material to wrap around a form and use as a space or space planning

Space planning is actually a very good use for FormIt. You may be referring to images you have seen like this.2018-03-02_0950.png

These are some materials that @Tobias_Hathorn made a while back as a way of demonstrating how to identify programmatic "blocks."  While the materials are just bitmaps, you can also name the groups. When the groups (and levels) are imported into Revit using our FormIt Converter add-in, you can create a mass floor schedule to do more complex area calcs. See the attached zip file for a FormIt and Revit 2018 file as an example.
