FAQ: What is the allowed amount of detail for Revit files "Updated" to Forma?

This question has come in from a few customers lately in different forms. The Revit Addin (which allows you to send proposals to Revit and then Update yourAutodesk Forma proposal with modifications made in Revit) can transmit meshes from Revit to Next-Gen. Revit models can of course be insanely detailed.
Q: To what extent will geometries sent from Revit (using "Update Proposal") to Autodesk Forma need to be simplified? How detailed can models saved to Forma from Revit be?
A: Update Proposal from Revit doesn’t have a strict limit on how detailed the model can be, but a few things to keep in mind.

  • Every new or modified element will take additional time to transmit to Autodesk Forma
  • Unnecessary geometry will contribute overhead to analysis calculations.
  • There is a mesh data size limit on individual elements. For the most part this doesn't affect Revit geometry which isn't typically super-curvy, but having many large meshes in the proposal can affect the performance of design mode

We do recommend simplifying the model as much as possible and think about what's really needed in Forma. In particular removing interior elements and smaller details like railings and entourage that don't contribute to analysis.

Note: this post was revised after the rebranding from Spacemaker Next-gen to Autodesk Forma
