Hi All --
(Just when we American's thought they were going to bed... 🙂 We are happy to announce that the latest update to EAGLE is now available from within your installed software. To access this, locate the License Information menu under the Control Panel. You should get an option to Download Update
This update introduces, amongst other things, the Walkaround and Obstacle Avoidance mode for Routing! (On by default) This is not an extension of the Follow Me router but rather, a completely new set of routing tools which follow design rules for clearance and which, when combined with Loop Removal which we'd introduced in 8.0, a simplified Spacebar to change routing layers, we hope these vastly improve your routing experience for EAGLE PCB.
The commands are on the far-left hand side of the Routing toolbar when in routing mode. You can continue to route without constraint or use the new obstacle avoidance to avoid costly mistakes!
For those that hadn't seen this in action, have a quick peak at the gif below and please please please provide your feedback!
Best regards,
Matt

Hey Matt,
Great stuff with the new routing mode. It's very snappy and feels quite polished.
Sometimes while using it I want to toggle the walkaround off and on to manually place tracks in select areas. Is there a way to map it to a shortcut?
I checked eaglerc.usr, but did not see any new option for it.
Best Regards,
Cameron
Kudos are much appreciated if the information I have shared is helpful to you and/or others.
Did this resolve your issue? Please accept it "As a Solution" so others may benefit from it.
The features sound really nice, but even 50% of a subscription still is a subscription model which my administration won't approve.
It crashes hard when I try to run it. Win 7, Dell XPS processor i7, 16G Ram, 1T hard drive. Nothing exotic on displays but am running two monitors. 8.0 works great. 8.1 - won't even get to control panel, crashes and sends data to Microsoft.
It did, but when I tried to create a shortcut it evidently deleted the batch file. There is only the shortcut left in the Eagle 8.1 directory, no batch file. And the shortcut can't find the batch file. So if you could send me the batch file I could try again, this time making a copy of it somewhere in case it deletes again.
There should be a setting for the preferred clearance, as well as the min allowed clearance. Otherwise you get a lousy route like where it routes on top of C1 when there is a ton of room adjacent to its left. Setting the min larger is not good, since in tight situations the min is the only solution.

Additionally, the Walkaround mode respects netclasses so you can use those to gain some additional control over the routing.
That's actually something worth noting as net classes in EAGLE previously were of little use unless you were auto routing so a lot of people will likely never have bothered using them. Now with Walkaround and Obstacle Avoidance, and even more so when Push and Shove comes to EAGLE, setting up the net classes will become far more important so it's probably something you should provide more guidance on in a blog post or something for people who may not be familiar with this.

Hi Jorge:
What I'm simply saying is, suppose you'd like to maintain 30mils separation (preferred clearance) between a trace and other components, UNLESS there is no room to do so (such as at the package itself). Then in tight situations, allow it to drop down to 5 mils. But that does NOT mean you want a 5 mil spacing everywhere--you want 30. Saying you can manually move it makes the new mode rather useless. Is what I'm describing already implemented (perhaps using the net classes)? I'm glad to see progress is being made in a positive direction.....one step at a time.

Hmm, I think they were used for ERC checking as well, even if manual routing was the name of the game. In any case, they may get used more nowadays. Hopefully both preferred & min clearances can eventually be set. Some routers also have a spreading function that can also post-process traces and space them out some around wide-open areas. No need to increase the chance of short circuits.
Hi, I have the same problem, but running EAGLE using the eagle_SW_OpenGL.bat file have same consequences -> It crashes.
I'm using Win7, same like bcarterW8DV4.
No, I'm using notebook with only one monitor, but with dual graphics. My HW is: AMD E2-3000M APU, 4GB RAM, dual graphics AMD Radeon HD 6470M and AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6380G. Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1. I hope that my description will be helpful.
Love this new feature, it already makes routing easier and feels fairly natural.
Although on more complex boards if your hand slips it tends to cause eagle to crash.
