Hello, is there not a 32-bit version of Eagle available?

Many thanks for the info.

Is there a student licence for Eagle7.7 32bit too?
Or is only the Express version available?

Hi @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well. Unfortunately, we don't sell V7.7 license anymore. We can send existing licenses, but we can't create new ones. So if you don't any existing EAGLE license then the only option for more features or board area is to go to Autodesk EAGLE and it's subscription.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,

Jorge Garcia

Benoit's posted .deb link saved the day. Upgraded 32 bit Xubuntu from 16.04 to 16.10 and Eagle vanished and no longer in Synaptic package manager. Now seem to be back in action. It would be good to have Eagle latest versions for 32 bit Linux version also available.

Dear Autodesk,

I have the free version of Eagle 7.7.0 (and a few older versions) in my Windows XP professional system.

I now want to start to use it for professional work and I don't mind that you decided not to support

32-bit versions any more - I am prepared to go on without your support.

But the last support from you is: How do I upgrade my installation to support legal work with four (4)

signal layers, 120 mm x 120 mm board area and 99 sheets.

Pleasse advice and thank you very much!

So this is crap!

Just because we 32bit users don't download the newest version every time it comes out (because we're busy CAD:ing) we don't get one anymore... instead you make a version for all the single tryers out there with their new fancy 64 bit OS:es...

I guess I can stay with the 7.6.0 that I've got, I have no plans to change a working work environment. I used some Protel CAD program in DOS well into the 2000:s  - as I knew it and getting a result was quick.

So as we all knew - Autodesk stepping in on good old EagleCAD - that we stayed with because we liked it, not because it was the best - would totally mess things up and now they just shut all 32 bit users down from updates - GOOD WORK - bosses must be very very proud...

jorge.garcia replied earlier this year:
"At this time we can no longer sell V7.7 of EAGLE, we are only setup to sell the subscriptions of Autodesk EAGLE."

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/eagle-forum/eagle-32-bit/td-p/6819481

So you're screwed - you need to solve it some other way. KiCAD is a quite competent program.

EDIT:
However... he writes here:
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/eagle-forum/eagle-32-bit/td-p/6819481/page/2

"So if you don't [have] any existing EAGLE license then the only option for more features or board area is to go to Autodesk EAGLE and it's subscription."

I guess if you have an existing license it might be possible for them to fix it.

I have Professional version license, just payed time ago, for Eagle 6.6.0. So I have valid license.

Can I use it for Eagle 7.7.0?

I can move to KiCAD, because in Eagle I have library and many projects for real products. I can't spent time for nothing to move to other software and learn it. No!

Please, check if my license is valid for 7.7.0 version. Otherwise, tell me how do I do.

About subscription, which it the price?

Don't think the license for 6.6.0 will work but you could try it (maybe on another computer so the installation doesn't screw things up).

I feel the same way, I'm brought up with EagleCAD and a lot of time is needed to be spent to relearn some other software. Which makes me angry they aren't doing any 32-bit versions anymore.

Prices for the standard version 8 (now called Autodesk EAGLE) seems to be $15 per month, $100 per year and then there's a 0% discount if you buy it for 2 years ($200).

https://www.autodesk.com/products/eagle/subscribe?plc=EGLSTD&term=1-YEAR&support=BASIC&quantity=1

Maybe one of those Autodesk guys will pop in here and give you a hand with it.

Whilst XP was probably the final release of Windows before its slow decline to the horribleness we have today, its now well out of support by Microsoft and no longer gets security patches so really should be retired.

How many 32-bit programs do you have that require you to run them on 32-bit XP? I bet a lot of them will run fine on a modern 64-bit OS. You could virtualize your current OS and run VMWare or VirtualBox to allow you to access any legacy stuff you couldn't get running on a more modern OS.

Unfortunately as others have said, v7 of EAGLE is no longer for sale and your v6 license is not valid for v7. If I were in your position I would be looking to upgrade to a modern OS and find solutions to run the legacy 32-bit only stuff in other ways if they couldn't be made to work. I'd then go for an EAGLE v8 subscription license.

If it's not hooked up to a network - what use is these "security patches"?

If you have a working environment you may not want to spend time trying to stuff these things into some other contraption of software or emulation where it may or may not work (time wasted).

Why is it so hard to make a 32-bit version of "Autodesk EAGLE"? So charge us a bit more then...

I guess you'll soon tell me to scrap my perfectly working Commodore 64 as well... or my Níntendo Entertainment System...

With XP, I don't have any problem, even if Microsoft doesn't support it any more.

That OS is stable (in previous PC, I don't have any problem for 10+ years) and fast.

For my job (free lance) I use some softwares that runs on 32-bit OS only: Eagle and Code Warrior, where I have many projects. If I change it migrating to 64-bit, I have to rewrite all, because, for example, Code Warrior has a different architecture.

Then I have other software with license and I don't want to spent money to updated software without reason.

I don't need to run always to have all software at the latest version!

I tryed to use Virtual Machine, but it's to slow, if I have to recompile projects! And it'ìs too slow if I have to work many hours.

The best solution is to have the compatibility to 32-bit.

I know it's possible, because my collegue that write software for PC, write only one version of 32 and 64 bit, without anyt problem. Check it with your engineers!

About subscription, is there other solution rather than to pay every month?

Yes, becasue, I don't use Eagle every day, every week or every month, but only when I need, and why I have to pay for many months if I don't use the software?

Do You have a common license?

The policy of CADSOFT was very good!

There was no mention of this being an secure system with no network connection, that's your assumption and isn't what I was responding to. The number of people with these types of systems, who are running EAGLE will likely be a small number and those still running XP will be a fraction of those.

Virtualisation is not the same as software emulation. I use it extensively in my systems and it's not hard to get working.

I personally won't be charging for it because I don't work for Autodesk.

Should everybody be charged extra to cover the overhead of producing 32-bit versions for people on legacy out of support systems?

It's not just a case of running an automated build process and adding an extra binary to the download page. These builds have to be tested on the systems they are targeting so all the new features will have to go through extensive testing on all the 32-bit platforms too, as well as any regression testing that needs to be done, so thats a lot more hours for the developers and testers. On top of that they then have to support issues on these platforms too so that's more work for the support staff.

The whole world is moving on, modern OS's are largely 64-bit, many software vendors have dropped 32-bit support, this isn't limited to Autodesk.

Not at all, but then if you were complaining that the latest version of Call of Duty wasn't available for these platforms and were asking the developers to target these platforms too I would suggest you go out and by an XBox One or a PS4....

Best Regards,

Rachael

With the subscription model, you only need to pay for the months you are using EAGLE. When you aren't going to use it, log into your Autodesk account and suspend your subscription. When you need to use it again, go in and enable your subscription again.

@infoJM9C9 wrote:

Unfortunately the licensing policy of CADSoft wasn't bringing in enough money and EAGLE was starved of development resource and didn't get any significant updates for a long time. Whether you agree with the subscription licensing or not, it's undeniable that Autodesk have put more development effort into EAGLE than it has had in pretty much its entire history and new features are coming out regularly.

I am an engineer so I know that there is a lot more to it than just generating the additional 32-bit output from the build system. See my other answer.

I have virtual machines for Windows 10, macOS and Linux on my machine using VMWare Fusion and they are not slow at all. If your PC hardware is relatively modern and has the hardware virtualisation extensions in the CPU and these are enabled in the BIOS then performance should be more than acceptable for development work.

If you don't want to use virtualisation though, that's fine, you could of course keep your current PC for legacy software which will only run on your existing system and have another one for newer software.

It is of course your choice to run XP and if you are comfortable with that.

I don't think I said you should upgrade everything to the latest version and I don't believe it would mean you'd have to re-write all your previous code. I suspect a lot of your current software will just run on a newer OS without any drama and won't need upgrading. Have you actually tried? It seems you want Autodesk to commit to spending significant resources on an ongoing basis to additionally support 32-bit platforms to save you the few days of effort required to bring your systems slightly more up to date.... Which everybody else of course then has to pay for through either increased subscription cost or having fewer new features or updates/fixes released less often.

Rachael

If you don't want to use virtualisation though, that's fine, you could of course keep your current PC for legacy software which will only run on your existing system and have another one for newer software.

I think I'm not only one user that have this problem.

For 32-bit binary You can add a symbolic additional cost for this, and the users that want it can pay it without problem, is the cost is reasonable!

About additional work for 32-bit, I think it's to do it on time.

And, in Visual Studio, I remember it's only a flag to have the compatibility with 32-bit. And it's no problem if the final exe file has more MBs...
