Edit Block In-Place Changes All Those Blocks in the Drawing

Hi!

When I Edit Block In-Place it affects all of the same block references.  I'm using AutoCAD 2016. I tried tinkering with the 'Lock objects not in working set' in the Settings Tab on the refedit dialogue box, but the same issue occurs. Overall the Block Editor and Edit Block In-Place commands seem to be doing the same thing.

Please help!

Thanks

That is not an issue, that is a FEATURE of how blocks work.  If you edit a block definition, all instances of the block are updated to the new definition.  That can save a large amount of tedious work required in editing many instances of the same linework.    If you want individual insertions to have individual characteristics, you should either not be using blocks for those situations or you should make the blocks into dynamic blocks to accommodate those differences.  Dynamic Blocks allow the user to insert parameters, actions, and constraints into the block definition that allow the block insertions to have individual properties within the bounds of what the dynamic properties can allow.

If you want specific assistance, post the file.

I understand how the blocks work. Just having an issue with the Edit Block In-Place.

Thanks though

What issue exactly then if you understand how blocks work and what you wrote about is "how blocks work"? Perhaps we did not quite understand your issue which might well be the case.

Let us know.

With AutoCAD 2013 and any other AutoCAD I've used in the past, when you use Edit Block In-Place, it changes the characteristics of that one individual block and not all blocks referenced to it. It was handy if you wanted to alter a feature without having to change all the blocks. Also, I don't want to EXPLODE the block.

That is not correct.  For ALL versions of AutoCAD that have had the block edit-in-place feature, it has always edited the block definition and all block insertions that have had that definition have been updated.  That is the way it has ALWAYS worked.

How does Edit Block In-Place differ from Block Editor?

If used on non dynamic blocks, edit-in-place keeps the current model space or paper space view.  When the block definition is saved it will update all other insertions.  It behaves the same as block editor except for the view you see while making changes.

When you use edit-in-place on a dynamic block it will also keep the model space or paper space view but the way it changes the block is a little different.  It will create a new unique block name for that single insertion but will destroy all dynamic parameters/actions for that insertion and it will no longer be dynamic.  It will not change the original dynamic block definition and will not update other dynamic blocks of that name.

Hmm.... I maintain that I used to be able to alter a block In-Place without it having an affect on the other blocks of the same name. Am I the only one?

Maybe you were inadvertently editing dynamic blocks and turning them into non-dynamic block insertions, each with their own unique block name.

Maybe that's what was going on.

I appreciate the video, it helps.

Thanks!
