I want to make a 3D dynamic block a column with reinforced steel inside, I intend to use the stretch action however does not work, move the solids, not stretched, as I make?

Dynamic block features weren't designed to function in 3D, only 2D.  In order for functions like that you will need either custom programming or move to a dedicated 3D modeling software like Revit or Inventor, depending on the discipline.

I didn't realise that solids in autocad don't stretch under normal conditions, but that appears to be your problem, I would use different geometry to create the blocks, something that will respond to the stretch command. That is something you will have to figure out from the options available in Autocad as obviously you have things that I can't test in LT. But if it will stretch just in normal space then it should also work in a dynamic block.

Maybe surfaces, 2D solids would definately do it but it's more work than how you are doing it now.

Have a play with this dynamic block. Try using lines and surfaces which are associated to the lines.

It will work if you try this.

- type smooth
- select the bar and the column
- click create mesh
- select all the mesh
- go to properties and change the smoothness into NONE
-then start making dynamic block as whay have done

i guarantee that it will work,

i have similar explanation in this link

if you convert the 3d solids to 3dfaces and/or surfaces then you can make it dynamic.

Just tried to create dynamic block by converting solids to surfaces and applying the stretch parameter/action, result was the surface moved - did not stretch? any one have any luck with creating 3d dynamic blocks in autocad?

Hi @Anonymous,

I have gotten this to work with 3dfaces but not solids or surfaces (yet). I will keep trying.

You make your model in 3d then you will have to convert to 3d faces. Google
how to do that you will have to explode 3d then convert to 3d faces. Once
you have done that then you can create a block and then edit in block editor
to add parameters and actions to it and that will work for you then.

Here you go brother.

Dynamic features will work with 3d objects you just have to convert them to 3d faces first as the dynamic properties will not work on solids.  Wait I take that back solids will not stretch but they will move just fine dynamically.

you can do something like this

This is exactly what I am trying to accomplish but to no avail. When i try to google how to Convert solids to 3d faces, all I can find is how to convert 3d faces to solids and no vice versa. How do I do it, how did you make it work?

Hi @Anonymous,

If you explode your 3D solids do they become faces?  Can you share your 3Dsolid so I can take a quick look?

You create a solid and when you are done you have to explode once which
creates a mesh then you use the convert mesh to faces command to make the
faces. The only thing to concern yourself with is the tessellation numbers
in options under modeling tab I believe. You want to set the numbers to
where it doesn't devide object too much. Try it out and you will see what I
am talking about. I'm sure you can find your own path from that point
forward. Out of curiosity what object are you trying to do this with and
for what application? If you have difficulty I can give it a shot for you
and tell you what works or doesn't work.

Explode then convert. But yeah basically correct

I am using CADmep fabrication for HVAC. I often have to create HVAC units and VAV boxes. At times I have to create 30 or more of them for one job because they are slightly different, such as in length and where the supply and return are. I am a revit person now working in cad and I was hoping to create something akin to families in revit. Its proving much harder than I thought. I attached a chiller I have created that I am trying to use stretch parameters on.

I have the stretch parameter set up and I can move it, problem is, it just moves, it wont stretch.

I DID IT. I went in to my 3d work station and changed it to a mesh and it worked. thank you guys for your help. This will help to make my work flow so much more productive!

Hi,

I used surfaces mainly. Surfaces can be associated with lines and the lines
in turn can be driven the dimensions. The extrusion or revolution of the
line or polyline can be driven with a parameter.

I started by creating the 2d block, then began adding the 3D components to
it and working out how to construct the 3D from the parameters that I had a
play with.

I hope that helps.
