Tip video: Making grooves for retaining rings

How to create a groove for retaining rings (with a little background on retaining rings). There are, of course, a million ways to do this - in the video I'm proposing the idea of making a re-usable cutting tool. This allows you to make a change to the cutting tool later and have all of the grooves in your design recalculate accordingly

I could definitely have made the cutting tool part of the pin component, and it might have been better that way.

@robduarte @lichtzeichenanlage the cutting tool should not be part of the pin, but part of the retaining ring component. Assuming that the retaining ring file/component has one body for in it, the cutting feature would be the second body in that component.

 

Then, when you insert that retaining ring into your design you break the link (as should be done wit standard parts!) and then you can assemble the retaining ring where it should be located and simply combine-cut the cutting feature with the pin.

 

That way one can build themselves a little library with functional standard parts that carry all the little machining operations with them and you don't have to design it new for every design you use that retaining ring i. It's only a ;Intel work for the first time.

Yes, sorry .. I should've watched the video to remind me what I was talking about in the first place. The retaining ring would be the component to pair that tool-body with.

@TrippyLighting@robduarte: My thought was the pix / axis is part of my library and has properties like length, diameter, material and grooves at positions left / right. But I see your point. Thanks for bringing this up.
