Manipulating Similar components in the same design

I am making a matched pair of bicycle dropouts. They are 2 separate entities but I want them under the same design and I want certain features of them to be linked. Other features of them will be different. How do I create a second component (dropout) that is the mirror image of the first? How do I then edit it but leave the unchanged parts of this component tied to the original? This way, if there is a design change it will automatically change both components.

Thanks,

Rich

Mirrored components/bodies will each change whenever one is changed.  You can make a Copy of the mirrored object, then Paste New to get a mirrored object that won't change with the original.  In order to do global changes, move the timeline to before the Copy operation. Make the changes and return the timeline to the end.

That was helpful and I was able to create a new component body that is a
mirror image. However I want to 'cut off' unwanted parts of the body and I
can't figure out how to do that. I tried creating a sketch and using the
Press/Pull command but it won't do it. Please advise,

Use the Extrude tool with the Cut option enabled.  The sketch you created should have a closed boundary around the area to be cut.  Select this area with the Extrude tool.

Here's my problem. If I create a new component then attempt to mirror the first one, I can't get the original component to go away. Then if I activate the original component it has a mirrored image attached to it. I figure it is the order of operations that I have screwed up. I want to make a mirror image and be left with the mirrored image only as a new component. I'd like to keep the sketches and bodies with the mirrored one if I can.

let's see some screen shots and/or your design file.  I bet some one will help you.  It sounds like you may need help with how your manipulating your components, but I can't be sure.

It doesn't work that way, all you get is the mirrored body. If the sketches where mirrored you could have all sorts of problems if there are projected reference in the sketch.

If you add one more step to your workflow, it can be done:

The real question is why do you want to delete the original?  Just turning the visibility off is simpler and doesn't have any potential of causing errors later.
