Creating New Component Causes Crash

Hi,

I just got the latest update (March 2016) and opened an existing model. When I try to create a New Component the system immediately crashes. I've tried different models and they all just crash the same way. I'm running on a PC.

Please help.

Thanks,

Ken

Are you submitting error reports to Autodesk? I didn't find any associated with your e-mail address.

Can you try the following?

  1. From the help menu > get a copy of the diagnostic log files and save these somewhere on your desktop
  2. Next,  go into the Preferences in Fusion 360, try switching the Graphics Driver from Auto-select to Direct X 11 or Direct X 9 and retest.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any quesitons.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

First off, I'm not getting a crash dialog that allows me to forward the crash to Autodesk. All I get is:

FusionCrash.jpg

I tried setting the graphics to DirectX 11 and that made it even worse - the crash occurred as soon as I right clicked on the top level in the model tree. Switching to DirectX 9 seems to have fixed the problem, but I really haven't done much testing other than creating a new component.

I've been running Fusion 360 on this same computer for many months without issue, so something in the latest update is causing this.

I've attached a diagnostics log as you requested.

Thanks,

Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the diagnostic log files. Can you try the suggestion in the below link and let us know if it helps?

When was the graphics driver for your computer last updated?

You can check by selecting the graphics diagnostics command in the help menu.

I note there is an option to "Limit all effect.." that may help as well.

I hope this suggestion helps! Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

I last updated my graphics driver in December 2015.

I reset my preferences for graphics driver to 'auto select'.

I followed the steps in the article you linked and the problem still exists.

I updated my drivers again (Nvidia Quadro 4000) to the February 2016 version and the problem still exists.

I checked the 'Limit All Effects' box and the problem went away.

I have been programing computers for many years and my experience tells me that this bug is probably more serious than what I've found so far. If a simple menu selection like 'New Component' causes a hard crash and the 'fix' is to disable graphics feautures, then we've probably just masked the problem and not fixed it. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks,

Ken
