How Do You BIM - Ok, Now Lets Bring That ReCap Mesh Into Revit

ReCap Mesh Into Revit-cover.jpg

With ReCap 2026 installed, you should have a ReCap Mesh tab in your ribbon. In this tab, you have the option to Link the Recap Mesh Model.

Selecting the Link ReCap Mesh Model icon will open a window to load the .RCMR file.

In the Add part of the window:

  • Specify the Positioning
    • By Shared Coordinates
    • Origin to Internal Origin
    • Center to Center
  • Use the Add Model… button to select the .RCMR Mesh Model to load.
  • Select OK.

The loaded mesh models will be added to your Revit model. All meshes will be loaded with its applied color and displayed with a bounding box. Each mesh will be represented in the Recap Mesh Model hierarchy window. They can be turned on or off as needed.

With the mesh models loaded into your Revit file, they can now be “Added to the Document” and assigned to a specific category. Adding a mesh to a category does not convert the mesh into elements of that category, it only assigns them to a category for sorting purposes.

From the Add To Document window:

  • Choose the classification category in the Hierarchy column.
  • Select the Revit Category from the drop-down list to assign the mesh content.

The meshes will be added to the Revit model as triangulated surfaces. The category assignment specified from the Add to Document window will be applied to the surfaces.

Next, add a few Levels as needed for the Floor and/or Ceiling locations. While you're at it, include a Section or Elevation showing the front and side views of the meshes. You might also want to place named Reference Planes at key content locations. Named Reference Planes are useful when selecting work planes to draw Revit content.

With some practice, you will soon be able to place Revit content such as Pipes, Ducts, Equipment, and more in the model and align it with the mesh elements. This is so much easier than the way I used to do it. Its not the Holodeck on the USS Enterprise (that’s XR Workshop). It is an easier way to visualize the content needed from the PointCloud though. I really look forward to seeing how far we can take this new feature.

There are several classes at Autodesk University 2025 this year, with Recap as the main topic. These classes are being taught by a variety of talented instructors and span many industry categories. If you are attending Autodesk University in Nashville this year, consider attending some of these classes for more information.

Does Revit snap to these meshes? If not they are about as useful as nw coordination models.

Just saw this in the Recap forum... Thought it might help some people clean up their meshes.
