If you've spent any time working in Revit, you know that speed and efficiency are key to getting things done. One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to speed up your work is by customizing your shortcuts. Sure, Revit comes with a set of default shortcuts, but why not tweak them to fit your workflow?
Why Customize?
Imagine you're constantly switching between a few tools—maybe it's the Align tool (AL) or the Move tool (MV). Reaching for these tools through menus every time slows you down. By customizing your shortcuts, you can streamline your process and make your workflow more intuitive.
How to Customize Shortcuts
Customizing shortcuts in Revit is easier than you might think. Just head to the Options and User Interface section and look for the Keyboard Shortcuts option, or simply type "KS" (yes, there's even a shortcut for shortcuts!). This brings up a dialog box where you can see all the existing shortcuts and, more importantly, change them.
To change a shortcut, just click on the current shortcut, type the new one, and hit "Assign." You can even set up multiple shortcuts for the same command if you want. The beauty here is that you can tailor your shortcuts to what feels natural for you.
-
Group Similar Tools: If you're a fan of consistency, try grouping similar tools under similar shortcuts. For example, all your dimension tools could start with the letter "D."
-
Keep It Simple: Don’t overcomplicate your shortcuts. The whole point is to make things faster, so choose shortcuts that are easy to remember and quick to type.
-
Export and Share: If you're working in a team, you can export your shortcuts and share them. This ensures everyone is on the same page, using the same efficient workflow, by just importing the .xml shortcut file.
