UCS for Each Segment of an Alignment

Hello!

 

I have yet to dive into customization with dynamo and lisps, so this may be a problem more suited to one of those tools, but I wanted to share my idea here.

 

I design coastal projects including beaches, coastal structures, and navigational channels. For all of these projects, but especially the nav channels, our alignments typically have several "cuts" or heading changes. I think it would be great if I could run a command that would drop a UCS at every geometry point (or at least POB and PIs) in an alignment.

 

This would be helpful because I typically want to work normal to the alignment, so i end up putting in a UCS and using the ortho cursor lock when drawing or labeling. This works well, but for projects with dozens of heading changes, it is a repetitive process that I wish could be automated.

 

It is also nice to have the UCS placed at the PIs and oriented such that my coordinates at the bottom of the screen are coordinates from the nearest cut. That is, we often will say something like "Cut-2, Sta. 6+25, Rge. 400" and being able to read UCS coordinates 625, 400 from the bottom of the screen is frequently helpful for figuring out where things need to go without measuring distances manually.

 

In the future, when I am more familiar with LISPs and how to write them, I will likely try to tackle this problem on my own and will most likely consult the customization forum. Then I will know whether or not this problem is something that a LISP can handle.

That sounds doable for straight segments, but I can't imagine how a curve could work.

I think you make a good point. We basically only work with straight segments for these projects.

 

I don't see why you couldn't do it with basic horizontal curves, though (assuming we are describing the same situation). You would just use the PI as the origin of the UCS even though the overall alignment never intersects the PI, only the tangent lines intersect at the PI. See Fig. 1 below for an example.

Maybe we are talking about different scenarios, or maybe you know something else about the limitations of UCSs that I have yet to discover.
