I've had the opportunity to work with the Styles Reference functionality workflow for a while now. Love the functionality, but there is room for improvement. I've worked on several different projects and the trouble is that the templates may come from many different sources, not always controlled by your own standards or even discipline.
For example, a recent project I worked on was for an agency that dictated the C3D template to use. This template included C3D styles, layers, linetypes, blocks, etc for about 8 different disciplines. The number of styles, layers and blocks in the template was staggering not to mention all the Command Settings were geared towards styles not associated with our discipline. While you could just toggle everything on and continue it bloated dwgs unnecessarily with content that did not apply. The alternative was to painstakingly select One-by-One (Shift-Select not available) the items you did not need.
The functionality I would like to see added is to be able to save a selection state withing the Styles Reference dialog as a "Styles Reference Set ". This "set" would allow the content to be filtered and saved for different disciplines, utilities, existing, proposed, etc. eliminating hours of picking what you don't want!
This "Set" would be defined inside the source template and be available to select as a filter inside the consumer dwg in the Manage Reference Settings dialog.
I believe this would reduce a lot of picking and inconsistencies between dwg using the source templates and the need to create separate templates for various reasons.
While I'm here talking about improvements to this command let me slip in this one as well. Please vote for this idea as well.
Include Dimstyles and Multileaders within the "Other Resourses" tab.
