Parcel, Line, and Curve Segment Locations Should Be Persistent

Parcel, Line, and Curve Segment Locations Should Be Persistent

Changing the number of vertices in a polyline or parcel should not affect the location of existing line/curve/parcel labels already placed in the drawing.

CUSTOMER USE CASE:

  1. The engineer provides a proposed easement location to the land surveyor.
  2. The land surveyor creates a sketch with segment labels of the proposed easement. The sketch includes different types of labels such as tags, dragged state, one line labels, stacked text labels, etc.
  3. The engineer makes a change in the proposed easement and provides a new easement location to the land surveyor.
  4. The land surveyor compares the new and old easement locations and makes adjustments to the boundary including adding or removing vertices.

THE EXPECTED WORKFLOW:

  1. The land surveyor adds labels to any new line/curve segments or chooses a different label style or location for new line segments created by removing one or more vertices.
  2. Renumber line/curve segments if necessary.

THE CURRENT WORKFLOW:

  1. Beginning with the last labeled segment, the land surveyor grip edits all labels back to their original line\curve segment.
  2. The land surveyor then completes the expected workflow previously described.

ANOTHER CURRENT WORKFLOW:

  1. The land surveyor changes the line/curve label style on that don't match the original label style before the edit.
  2. The land surveyor adjusts any dragged state or non-centered segments back to the original location before the edit.
  3. The land surveyor adds labels to any unlabeled segment.
  4. The land surveyor renumbers all line/curve segments after the modified segment.  (May not have been necessary if labels hadn't moved).

The scenerio is I've gone through the design process and I'm about ready to print. An urgent change is required where I need to break a feature line that goes across my site showing how the water flows through the site. After the break I now have all of my labels on one segment of the feature line where I broke it and the other part has no sign of the labels that where there. The labels must stay attached to the segment labeled even after an operation occurs on the feature line.

This causes people to call Civil 3D bad names and say Civil 3D is hard to use. Wouldn't you after having to do rework over and over again?

Too, if we apply a grading to a feature line that has labels applied, why do the labels act like there is a new segment between every point where the grading transitions from cut to fill? It serves absolutely no purpose to have labels with identical slope values between each of those segments. The labels should not be affected at all.

Although Tom did a better, less sarcastic, write up. The votes in the other idea should be applied to this idea.

When I posted this idea, I added a link to a Screencast recording showing this issue. Since I don't see where it appears in this Idea, I'm adding a link in this comment. The video should clarify the issue that's happening and the extra steps needed to get the labels back to where they should have been after the edit was made.

Yes, please fix this! This is a great feature in Civil 3D for Surveyors, until you have to change the number of segments.

This issue happened again to me last week. I had a subdivision all labeled then a change was requested to remove the lot lines between alley ways and street ROW. Because a closed polyline was used as the block extents, removing the two requested lot lines made the majority of my labels revert to a location near the beginning of one side of the block near an alley. I had to drag them along the property line back to the middle of the original segment (each front lot line). For the other half of the block I had to add labels then drag them to the middle of each front lot line because I didn’t want to remove the existing lot line labels.

A way to lock these label locations is definitely needed.

I think my problem is related to this issue.  I had an easement parcel created with all line and curve segments labeled with tags.  I had to add three line segments to the easement.  It added the line segments and labeled them in the correct order but removed the last three line segment tags of the parcel so I had to go and re-add them.  This can be very time consuming depending on the size of the parcel and how early in the parcel the line segments are added.  This really needs to be addressed.  My surveyors keep calling Civil 3D bad names and using the C word (Carlson).

It's now 2024, 10 yrs later, and we're still waiting for solution to this issue.

As a designer that does a lot of site grading designs, I use feature lines as surface breaklines to fill in areas where corridors are not suitable. In order to better understand the grade/elevation relationships between each FL at a glance. I label the FL's segments w/ grade and vertexes w/ start/end elevation labels.

The issue is that inevitably new vertexes or grade points will need to be added or deleted.  Every time a point is added or deleted all the labels on that FL shuffle down one segment. Thus having to manually re-shuffle every label that came after the edit to be moved to its original segment/vertex.

So frustrating.

Pls allow labels to be "ANCHORED" to the segment they are attached to.

At least, only delete the labels on either side of the edit. Then we can add those 2 or 3 labels back in easily.

See screen capture for example of issue.
