Point group referencing surface that no longer exists in drawing

I've noticed "extra" point groups showing up in the point group list that are referencing (in use) "something" because they have the small, yellow triangle next to them.

They were named "Ex_Surface.2" and "Ex_Surface.3" and at least I could change the names to "void" and "void2" so othe people in the office would accidentally use them.  

I did a search on the "setting" tab under "Surface style" to see if I could locate the references.  

For example, I picked a style that was "in use", right cliked and selected "find references".  It showed that there was a "Tin Surface\Ex_Surface (1)" and a "Tin Surface\Ex_Surface (2)". This is strange.

There is only one, single surface and that is named "Ex_Surface".  

I've tried with a blank drawing, but these seem to be in the template file we're using.  

Is ther a way to delete the point groups or somehow "trick" the software to allow mw to remove the reference ao I could then delete the point group?

I'd look inside the blocks to see if they are located there. Sometimes Civil 3D thinks the objects within the blocks are actually in the drawing. Try purging out the blocks one at a time and see if that resolves the issue. I usually do 10-20 at a time, text and if it fixes it go back and go through the ones just purged to find out which one is the culprit.

That fixed half of it.  One point group was able to be deleted after discovering the block to purge.

However, the other point group is proving to be more tenacious to delete.

Then it might be a block within a Civil 3D style. Good luck going through those.

Luckily did not have to go through all those styles.

By stroke of luck, I found the last reference in a title block that was in use.
