object viewer has a grid display

Hello, I am somewhat new to civil 3d and I am wondering how to get this grid display off of my object viewer? I just want to view in normal conceptual or shades of gray. I tried changing it to these but nothing changes.

What is it that you are displaying in the Object Viewer? If it's a TIN surface, then the different visual styles (as shown by @user181) should change the display. It sounds like you've already tried to change these so that would indicate that what you are viewing is not a Civil 3D surface. When you select it and type LIST, what is shown? If it's a surface, it should show "AECC_TIN_SURFACE". If it shows something else, let us know what it is and we'll be better able to assist.
