Moving Points TO a Surface

Anonymous

I have a surface that was created from survey data. I also have a bunch of points that were collected with a handheld GPS so they are OK horizontally but have no elevation value. I want to determine as accurately as possible what the elevation of these points would be if "projected" up to the surface.

How do I do this?

I am using Civil 3D 2011. Have access to 2015.

I guess the simpliest way would be to bring the points in, then set your osnap to "node". Go to the "analyze" tab, and click the Inquiry tool. There is a dropdown menu in there. Expand "surface" , and choose "surface elevation and grade" there. Then click nodes...it will display the elevation, and you can jot them down as you go. Note: if you have multiple surfaces in your drawing, you'll be asked to choose which surface you want elevations in.

You might want to try the "Elevations from Surface" command.
You'll find it on the ribbon > Modify > Points > (Modify Panel) "Elevations from Surface"

or type the command EditPointSurfaceElevs

OK...that works. BUT, I have several hundred points that I need to capture this Z value. Is there a way to "move" the points to the surface, then export the lot and tada...

Ah...you wanted to move them to the relevant surface elevation...then Troma is spot on...

Doesn't seem to work for points?

It's a command for points only, so it doesn't work for anything else!
What specific trouble are you having?

I have nodes that were brought in from a GPS survey all at an elevation of 10 (arbitrary).  I get this message:

Selected entity must be of type: Feature Line, Auto Feature Line, Auto Corridor
Feature Line, Parcel Segment, Survey Figure, Polyline (3D), Polyline, Polyline
(2D)

WAIT! I think have it. Was going straight from Modify to Elevation command instead of selecting POINT first...sorry for the extra help.

But Thanks to everyone

OK, I get you. No worries.

The one I explained is a command that only works on points and won't let you select any other objects. You can specify which points with the following prompt:

Points [All/Numbers/Group/Selection] <All>:
