MAKE XREF OBJECTS ACTIVE IN DWG

Hello,

I'm using Civil 3D 2016, and I have an active pipe network file which I created a network of pipes and structures.  I XREF into the DWG a surface file, which contains the proposed ground surface.

I want to make the object surface active in the same file, not as an XREF.  In microstation, I could simply copy and paste and it would become active, then I would detach the ref.  How do I do that in Civil 3D?

Thanks,

You can copy/paste the surface into another drawing. But I'd suggest creating a Dref (shortcut). That way if changes are made in the original file the drawing with the Dref [DataReference] will update.
