How to stop existing ground contours regenerating

I am frustrated with the constant delays while C3D processes existing ground contours while working in a drawing. I have tried turning on LevelOfDetail which helps a lot but it often causes the drawing to hang. The surface is DREF'd into all of our drawings. Since the contours are not changing, I don't need them to regenerate. Is there a way to stop this?

There is no way to stop the regen that I have found. With a large site like yours you will be severely hampered by this problem as you have seen. One workaround is to turn off the surface display in your design models and use an XREF as a background to display the contours for reference. That way you have the surface model for sampling, etc. without triggering the regens. To create the XREF, explode the surface or extract the contours so they become static polylines. You don't want to XREF a surface model while having the same surface live in your drawings.

For your sheet production you can create cropped surfaces to suit smaller portions of the project covered by the sheets. That is about all I can offer as a workaround.

Double check your contour labels. If they're set to "mask countour only" It will regen the surface and re-apply linetypes across each contour for each regen (zooming included).

Another problem we ran into was closing the Sheetset Manager when working in large files. If someone else opens, closes, or does anything to trigger a sheetset update you'll get regen as well making it almost impossible to work.

For some reason autodesk changed in the core so it cannot open items read only in the background and it showed in 2020 and more notably 2021. I think that's the root for plotting problems (eg when you have an OLE spreadsheet in your sheet and someone has it open) as well as a slew of these regen problems.

I am aware of the performance hit when using the label mask setting you mentioned. That is not being used. Sheet set manager is not a factor since I am the only one in these smaller jobs. No OLE objects are being used. I am sure I am not the only one experiencing this behavior. Maybe everyone just accepts this is how the software is and doesn't complain.

It's how to eat an elephant.

Is it when switching between layouts?  If so, try LAYOUTREGENCTL = 2.  This will cache the model tab and all layouts.

While this may not be the most acceptable route, it can work in this circumstance. If the contours are sure not to change, then extract the contours to polylines and save them into a new drawing and xref that into the the production file (and be sure to either remove the TIN or turn it to "no display" before saving the new file). Add that to the caching of viewports and it might prove very efficient.

Cheers

Yet another benefit in LDD3 that was not included in Civil series just like special linetypes instead of creating your own it should still be a default, like not regen contours unless you set it, pretty ridiculous job protection for Autodesk.

The future lies in surfaces created by point clouds so they should get their act together regarding this unnecessary software slowdown before someone else does.

If I simply edit the vertices on a 2d polyline that has nothing to do with the surface, it regens contours. Cropping, masking, or decimating points are fixes that Autodesk uses to hide the problem.

I do turn off the three annotation settings in the bottom status bar that look like throwing stars with slight improvement.

Anything I find I'll pass it on.
