Geotechnical Module

Just started using the geotechnical module in c3d 2017 and importing AGS4 data received from a site investigation contractor.

When I import the data apart from a couple of warnings it all seems to be ok.

However a couple of problems;

  • When I go into 3d orbit, I don't see the different layers of strata (see attached screenshot)
  • The descriptions don't update to whats in the AGS4 file such as top soil etc it keeps the ID 101

Is this a problem with the AGS4 file, or is CSV the better method for import? or is a template problem (using a customized OTB 2017 UKIE template.)

Thanks in advance.

Hi @M_c3d

it seems as if it's an issue with the AGS4 file.

Is it possible to send it to me, so that I can test. I can create a support case for you for data exchange - let me know if you prefere that.

CSV and AGS4 should work the same way.

To test if the reason is a customized template, you could test with the csv template files that come with the Geotechnical Module, check the path C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\AutodeskGeotechnicalModule2018.bundle\Sample Data

Yes could you create a support case please.

Thanks,

Hi

You will get the effect you describe if you band by data you do not have, for instance if you import AGS data, which only has legend code populated and not geology code, when the boreholes are displayed using the default settings they will appear as a single colour with no bands.

In the Location Manager you need to change the Band to one populated. if you're working with AGS data it is common for the initial data from the contractors to have Legend code populated but not geology code. Geology codes are normally added by the consultants who are interpreting the data.

loc manager band.PNG

Note: For viewing and modelling geology you should be working with interpreted geology codes.

I hope this helps

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for your reply.

This does fix this issue for the bandings not showing.

In terms of where I need to fill in the geology code, could you direct me to where this needs to be done, is it in the AGS file?

Thanks

Yes it is in the AGS file, it's under the GEOL_GEOL heading in the GEOL group, normally right beside the Legend Code, (GEOL_LEG)

I've added the GEOL_GEOL information but its still not coming in as it should (missing the descriptions and not showing the strata until changed to Legend Code. Below is the where I have added it. Any idea of the problem?

Thanks

Hi

The GEOL codes go in the geol group see below, you will also have to make abbreviation fro them, in ABBR (as you seem to have done)

"GROUP","GEOL"
"HEADING","LOCA_ID","GEOL_TOP","GEOL_BASE","GEOL_DESC","GEOL_LEG","GEOL_GEOL","GEOL_GEO2","GEOL_STAT","GEOL_BGS","GEOL_FORM","GEOL_REM","FILE_FSET"
"UNIT","","m","m","","","","","","","","",""
"TYPE","ID","2DP","2DP","X","PA","PA","PA","X","PA","X","X","X"
"DATA","BH1","0.00","0.50","","101","TS","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH1","0.50","1.50","","102","MG","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH1","1.50","12.00","","803","ST","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH10","5.80","8.60","","803","ST","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH10","0.00","0.60","","101","TS","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH10","3.10","5.80","","501","GV","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH10","0.60","1.40","","102","MG","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH10","1.40","3.10","","201","CL","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH11","1.00","11.50","","803","ST","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH11","0.70","1.00","","102","MG","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH11","0.00","0.70","","101","TS","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH12","9.20","11.50","","803","ST","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH12","0.10","1.20","","102","MG","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH12","1.20","5.50","","201","CL","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH12","0.00","0.10","","101","TS","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH12","5.50","9.20","","501","GV","","","","","",""
"DATA","BH13","1.00","11.50","","803","ST","","","","","",""

However I do need to give you a word of warning, assigning Geology codes should be done by Geotechnical Engineer, it is not a directly a one to one correspondence to the legend codes.

Thanks, finally got there! Have sent the comments back to the site investigation contractor to get them to reconfigure the file to include this information and provide it in this format for the future.
