Exporting surface data to excavators on site

Anybody know if excavators use any particular software that imports Autodesk data, such as dwg or Land XML to enable them to excavate the exact proposed land profile?

It depends on the machine control system installed on the excavator - we export 3D dxf's for ours and the machine control software converts to the required format.

Dear Neilyj,

Thank you - and how do you get the 3D DXF to the machine software, just via USB drive?

I believe so - I just supply the relevant dxf files and the site engineer does the rest...:)

Natalie,

Welcome to the Forum. As a gentle suggestion, please mark only the particular post(s) you feel solved your question. Kudo's are also welcome for posts you feel were helpful.

This last summer I worked as a Grade Checker/Surveyor on a Solar Farm project in Southern Nevada. All the dozers, blades and BG's had Trimble GPS Machine Control. I never got comfortable with Trimble Link in C3D, so I worked back-and-forth with C3D and Trimble Business Center HCE. For Survey Data Collectors(using SCS900 software) a TTM file(Surface) and a DXF file(Linework) is necessary. Machine Control requires an SVD file(Site Vision Design) and an SVL file(Site Vision Linework).

Natalie,

For Trimble Machine Control you put the SVD and SVL files on a Thumb Drive and just plug that thumby into each machine's controller. Amazingly, it just automatically and effortlessly loads the surface and linework.
