Draworder or display order

I had a friend tell me about the draworder command while hatching solid asphalt; I thought it looked bad to have boxes of unshaded areas around text. He said " 1) draw polyline around area to be hatched. 2) hatch it 3) type draworder in command bar. 4) select the polyline encompassing the hatched area. 5) promt 'back' ". It worked....Now it wont work anymore Gawd!!!

One of my bosses said " I do it a different way ". he clicked on his hatched concrete, right clicked, clicked display order and then move to back. I can't get that to work either. Am I doing something wrong or is this software just messing with me?

Don't select the polyline, select the hatch, and then set your Display Order/Draw Order.

Are you printing your solid hatch as a grayscale?  If I hatch anything solid then it's going to print in a grayscale and there's no need for boundaries around text. Also looks good, but you still may have to push the hatch pattern to the back every so often.

I tried that, it still does not work. I even flattened everything wondering if 3d had something to do with it.....it still hatches around the text instead of going under it.

Im not sure about the grayscale. I just select monocrome, plot transparency and hit print. 

I believe by saying "no need to have boundaries around text" you are suggesting a setting to turn that off that I need to find lol. I have gotten much better at plotting thanks to you guys but I'm still not great at it.

You need to turn off island detection. The text is the island.

Im sorry for not following up, im in the midst of buying a house.

May I ask before I follow up, is island detection in the properties box, or in settings?

Look at the hatch settings. There's options on how it will hatch. 

Generally I place my hatch area on a layer that I can isolate hatch that area and undo the isolation. Almost all the hatch patterns I use are grey scaled so that any text can quickly be brought to the front.

You can change the draw order through the hatchedit. It give you more options. Another option would be to do the opposite. Select everything in and around the hatch and put their draw order to front.

Draworder has always seemed a bit flaky to me. I sometimes have to Select All, remove the object I want to be in the back and then bring everything else to the front.

I recently learned about a command LAYERORDER. That will set a plot order based on the layers. So if you put your hatch layer at the bottom of the list. It should plot last.

Thanks to you, I forced myself to learn grayscale and I love it. Just pick a gray color, turn grayscale on and type a number in the box....Not so hard. I think It is better than transparency because transparency would not work on a block but grayscale did.

Should be to the right on the hatch ribon it's a little hidden but there is a pull down with options

There is another command you might want to try: "hatchtoback" It will move all hatching to the back without having to select it as will "texttofront"  bring all text to the front.

Darn it, I see the pull down box, but no Island detection. Are you using an older version maybe?
