creating surface from Lidar file

I am trying to create surface from LIDAR data using C3D-2013.

I have *.las files in the directory - I can see them in File Manager.  But when I go to: Point cloud - create Point Cloud - create a new point cloud database - Files to be imported (*.las) - software doesn't see any files!

Why? What is the way the create the surface in C3D from *.las file?
Thank you!

D,

About the only way I've found is @autoMick 's way in this thread:

I use laszip.exe to pull out the classification I need, usually the ground surface, to get the number of points down to a manageable number. I also have set POINTCLOUDPOINTMAX to 10000000.

Step 1:  Follow the instrustions that @rl_jackson provided above to create a point cloud.

Step 2:  Add the point cloud created in step 1 to your new surface (Bray Rd).  See the following link.

I'm in the process of writing a "how to" for a company on this topic.  Take a look at the attached PDF.  I believe your answer lies on the top of the fourth page.  Are you adjusting yoru file type to import the LAS file?

Nice how to.

Just missed the point - I have contours and created the surface (looks great in the file where I created the surface) and created a data short cut for that surface.
PROBLEM - I open another file, use the data short cut for that surface and get trash.
The problem is something to do with the data short cut, . . . .
I have been creating surfaces from Lidar contours (YES, contours) and had no problems till last week.

Thanks

@Anonymous, I believe my answer was on point when directed to @davshkl's question.

I didn't know you were posing an issue.  I reread the string and this is the first anything has been stated about data shortcuts.  Do you have another thread going on about data shortcuts?  Regardless, when you say you use the data shortcut and get "trash" what exaclty do you mean?  Do you get nothing?  Is the surface incorrect in accuracy?  Do you have the correct data shortcut working folder?

Mr. Porter

You were so right 8 years ago, when you told me "you will have the most difficulty learning civil 3d"
I have used AEC and Land desktop forever it seems.
And am still looking for a good Civil3d manual.

Yes, there are two strings.
And I am responding to the wrong one.
