Autocad backup files

Good morning, I have a general question in regards to Autocad Civil 3D backup files. I recently tried to open a backup file and was prompted to select a software in which to open the (.bak) file, I went ahead and selected standard Autocad 2d to open the (.bak) file. However, the back up file did not open. In addition, all of my backup files now appear as a standard Autocad 2D file. My question question is

1. How do I open up AutoCad Civil 3d (.bak) files

2. How do I convert the (.bak) files from showing the standard AutoCad 2D symbol to the original (.bak) file icon.

Thank  you!

Change the file extension to .dwg and then AutoCAD will open it.

To open a .bak file you need to rename the file and change the .bak to .dwg and then open the file.

To remove the file association of .bak follow the instructions HERE
