Desktop Connector only Updates if Application is Closed and then Opened again

A colleague and I tested how the synchronization works using a word file on BIM 360 Team.

Person A opens and then closes the file in word (but does nor close Word down), without affecting changes.

Person B now opens the file and affects changes.

Person A opens the file again, but it does not show the changes B made.

Person A closes down word and opens the file, the changes B made are now visible (the new file is downloaded from the cloud)

Surely BIM 360 team should test whether the two files are the same before choosing whether or not to download it? Does anyone know whether this the way in which Desktop Connector is supposed to function?

Hi there,

I see your point, but yet it doesn't surprise me very much.

The desktop connector indeed doesn't send every save to the cloud, sometimes you need to close the application before your changes turn up online.

I'm quite sure that the tool isn't supposed to work like Google Docs (or...) where changes are shown in realtime. But when multiple people accidentally start making changes, you don't want to lose them, that issue is now only covered by the fact that Team keeps all versions that you created.

Now as far as I know, BIM 360 Team should get some Vault-like check-in, check-out behavior. Hence that you can 'claim' a file for editing, and only after you checked it in again other people can edit. Viewing the file 'read-only' in the state before check-out remains possible.

Hope that helps.

Hi Alexander,

I created an idea for this here if you would like to vote for it:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/bim-360-ideas/vault-behavior-for-desktop-connector/idi-p/7707020

I hope you don't mind that I "borrowed" your description as it is as descriptive as can be.
