“Update to Latest” Load Times

Anonymous
Not applicable

In design collaboration when I want to create a new package I need to hit the “update to latest” button before I can create one.  This process of updating usually takes anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to finish.  Is this how long it typically takes?

The time for this operation to complete is mainly dependent on the work being asked of our translation pipeline.  If you have dozens of Sheets and 3D Views selected for translation in the Publish Settings dialog, then there will be a lot of compute cycles required to prepare everything for Viewing.  Conversely, if you've selected a Set with a single Detail View, then translation will be very quick.

Additionally, we are very close to rolling our scheduled publishing of models, which will allow you to set a time for all updated models to be automatically published, so they are ready for sharing when you need them,

Cheers,

Kyle

Thanks Kyle for the response. Made that post on my old autodesk account earlier.  Glad to hear there is something coming on the horizon that you mentioned.  Sounds great.  I’m currently asking BIM360 to translate 16 sheets and one 3D view to give an idea what I am doing. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something to speed it up.   Thanks!

Hey @ErikFrandsen

Thanks for reaching out. Publishing duration depends on many aspects as Kyle mentioned, and obviously of course models size and complexity, or number of elements within a view or sheet. But your approach is correct, and the planned possibility of scheduling and automating the publish should help.

We as well discussed about adding automating for creation and sharing of a package. What is your take on that?

Best regards,

Markus

Hey Markus,

This is the issue we ran into and why I created this post:

I am working with all of our engineers and one other architect on BIM360 because we are all remotely located from each other.  It was crunch time to get a schematic design package out on a important deadline and we are all sitting there waiting for BIM360 design collaboration to finish processing so we could create a new package to share & consume.  It is a little frustrating when you are under the gun to get drawings completed and you want a small & simple update to go to the team but it takes forever to do so.  I was thinking we could go back to linking the actual "live" central files together instead of using the design collaboration "package / consume" process, but that seems like we are not using the tools like they were meant to be used.  Would not be able to use "change visualization" and all the cool stuff that goes along with it.  I guess we could do that to get small changes that we didnt need change visualization on but seemed kind of weird having to change the linking path back and forth.  Anyways that's why I came here to figure out if there was a quicker way to help speed that up.

Any suggestions would be helpful, but I understand if it's a limitation right now that is being worked on for future releases.

Thank you.

Hey Eric,

Got it, thanks for the clarification. There are two areas where we plan are going to invest: as mentioned already the possibility to schedule a publish process on a certain day and time of a week. This will be available soon.

The other piece is to unveil the great benefits of Design Collaboration to projects that are live-linking models. Change visualization, aggregated project model, etc. along the lines you mentioned it as well already. Here we are right now starting to work on, and are clarifying workflows and requirements with users. If you like, I'd include you in these talks. It's a 30 minute web session where we will have a look at the current state and early designs we have. Just send a brief note to markus.briglmeir@autodesk.com and let me know if you are interested.

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Markus
