We are struggling on large projects with the ability to know what links we are using: Shared/Consumed/Live. If you are wondering why we would switch between any and all 3, well that depends on the project and the discipline and their needs. Mechanical may need to consume or link a shared model so their deadline can be met, but Architecture may need a live Structural model at all times when design is fluctuating rapidly. In SD to even half way through CD, live models are great, but then you start running into ownership issues related to live linking, especially for Mechanical and Electrical. It is easy to lose track of what you are linking due to the fact that the path does not indicate what file you are actually linking. This is essential, and should be considered for implementation, or we continue to risk having stale models or ownership issues, especially on larger projects.
