BIM 360 Design Revit e-transmit option

The idea of everyone working together in the cloud is a beautiful dream!  However the reality is that we still have to work with those who aren't ready to soar in the clouds.  I would like the Revit e-transmit tool to work in cloud models as I still have to download and/or save Revit models and go through the process of sending them to project engineers and consultants who fail to see the value of purchasing a BIM 360 Design license.  I still need this function even though I explain how they can download the latest published model from the project site.  The download function of the project site is an all or nothing sort of thing.  I get every model linked to the main model, even though I only want the architectural in most cases.  My current solution is to open the model, save it locally and then send it along.

Yes... add this idea or improve the download method. In addition, our clients may not have access to the models in the cloud and there needs to be an efficient way to get the model transmitted to them.

I think this is also valid for large projects where purging during a publish would really help our consultants keep their file sizes down and still receive the most recent model and sheets. MEP especially has trouble with a BIM 360 hosted architecture model once we get to CD's. The files just get too big for them to use.

With the advent of the new BIM 360 Design hub (Revit 2018 and 2019 at present), this request becomes more urgent.  Unlike the old C4R hub, those without a BIM 360 Docs or BIM 360 Design license (reportedly, I haven't tested this) cannot access the the new BIM 360 Design hub cloud project sites.  The troll under the bridge gots-ta-get-paid before travelers can pass on to catch a glimpse of the wondrous land of the project-in-the-cloud!  Therefore, in the new kingdom, it is not even possible for the unlicensed masses to download the latest model on their own.  Unfortunately, any added cost (like a scary troll) will just further discourage the new-technology-reluctant from setting one toe on the project-in-the-cloud land.  

Someone might assert that an A360 Team license was required for access to the project-in-the-cloud under the old C4R hub dynasty, but that simply isn't true.

The problem extends to BIM360 Design. It seems like this is a must have functionality for downloading. I'm surprise not many people are asking for it. I just shared 3 models, all linked to each other and our consultant received 9 models, and it sort of defeat the purpose of having "view only"  mode if you can download a host model and it comes with all the links anyway (where you might only have "view only" access to).

This option is also important for sub-consultants who have been invited into a project, but are not in control of the BIM 360 environment.  We want to be able to quickly archive a project at the major milestones and store it on our own servers.  Nothing is worse than trying to find information on a project 5 years later and no longer having access to the Cloud servers that held all our data.

We are an Interior Design firm and we work with a lot of Revit links.

For example, in an apartment building, each apartment type is a single Revit model (named for example 3½A, 3½B, 4½A, 4½B…). If in the project there is 120 different apartment types, we have 120 Revit models, just for the apartments (and yes, one of our project contains 120 apartment types!).

To create the complete building with all the apartments, we have a Revit model (named for example, UNITS). This model contains all the 120 apartment models and all their copies and mirrored copies. So, if the entire project counts 700 apartments, in UNITS model, we have 700 Revit link models from the 120 apartment types.

We also have a model that is for all the spaces shared with everybody (staircases, elevators, lobby, librairie, pool, etc…) named, for example, COMMUN.

We have other Revit models but I will stop here because my point can be explain with the models already described.

In UNITS, we have all the apartment Revit models linked into it.

In COMMUN, we have UNITS linked into it.

So we have links into links. Because of that, we can’t publish our models, it won’t show the 3rd “parties”, we don’t see the apartments. We are the only firm that has to be “Live” in BIM 360. The Architect and the Ingeniers have only 1 Revit model so they publish each week.

If we want to export out of BIM 360 our Revit models, the only option for us now is to:

1. Open the Revit model (ex: 3½A)
2. Save As / Desktop (create a new folder to put all the models into)
3. Do #1 & #2 with all the other 122 Revit models (apartments, UNITS, COMMUN….)
4. Open from desktop: UNITS, Reload From: All the links
5. Open from desktop: COMMUN, Reload From: UNITS
6. Make a eTransmit of COMMUN

It would be easier to make a eTransmit directly from BIM 360.

Please help us and give eTransmit a place into BIM 360!

it's not productive to copy a cloud model (BIM360) locally and then clean it up....

Bonus Functions:

-Being able to choose a publishing template

-Choose the sub-projects to be exported

- Delete the "Sub-projects".

- Delete all "Elements of a Sub-project" but keep the "Sub-project".

Over three years and still no BIM360 Etransmit option, this feature should be standard by today's standards. Would you please implement this tool? Whether in local or cloud, Revit Tools should work in both situations.

Opening and saving locally before using eTransmit is a step that needs to be eliminated.

To add to other comments, the Publish mechanism is good but doesn't support the archiving of the complete project models at various milestones.  Having to continually select all views/sheets is not convenient.

It is essential (legally required) for our Architecture firm that we have the ability to archive the complete project.  Transmit a Model did this and was great, even if many users never knew about this facility.  

It would be great to allow Transmit a Model to work with BIM 360 and ACC projects.

thank you Alexander.  I hadn't had success with transmit a model before.  

I found that I can use this but no linked files (RVT or CAD) are transmitted.  Using the "Add Files" button, I was able to transmit all the RVT files.  However, once transmitted, none of the files will open ...  so, not useful.

I renew and underscore my suggestion that we need a completely functional "transmit a model" for BIM 360 and ACC projects, much like what already exists as a Revit addin, without the Autodesk construction cloud.  Better would be nice but at least give us that.

Follow up:

So I recently used the "Download source file" option on an entire project.  I found that the models were complete, not the published version.  And when I opened one, I got that (wonderful) dialogue asking to Save as Central or Work Temporarily, with the check box for Detach greyed out. 

All files in the project were in the ZIP file, which was nice.  But the link paths (for both RVT and DWG files) were not stripped out.  The paths for all RVT files were changed to reflect the location of the extracted files on my C drive.  Paths for DWG files were still pointing to the original Autodesk Docs folder.

So the option to Download source file is getting there ... but it's not there yet.  It's the best option available.

We've been getting very inconsistent results from Download Source lately - sometimes it's only one model, sometimes it includes the linked Revit models.  Haven't found a reliable method yet.  Never seemed to be a problem until a couple months ago.  So, instead of improvements, we get diminished capability.

The quick option until we get a 360 e-transmit would be to use desktop connector and select the "local" file from there. E-transmit to a file folder as needed!

Totally agree having CLOUD processing to gather/purge and send individual files with or without a dated folder and transmit a LIVE or Published version of a file & Links & CAD & Images /etc. would be awesome!
