Lack of Functionality

Hi,

Apologies if this post is similar to others, but I wanted to ask a question.  I am a Autocad user of 30 years and have just changed organisation where they did not have it.  I requested the software and have been given this strange web version with a fraction of the required functionality, options, preferences etc.  The version I have is so basic I would complain if it was free.  Could you tell me if there is  a sliding scale of versions and my organisation has just opted for the cheapest?

Hi Michael,
I believe I understand your question, but it would help me to understand what you were given by you company. 

Were you directed to login to web.autocad.com ?
Also, do you see a green banner at the top of the app that reads "Extended Access Program...."?

I'm guessing that these links might help on understanding the AutoCAD offerings on our web, mobile and desktop platforms. AutoCAD web is an entitlement to a subscription and is not able to be purchased separately.  The link that Mike supplied in an earlier post covers the product description.

So your employer doesn't know what AutoCAD on a PC (or MAC) is that's you've used for 30-years: so why not educate them? You're just projecting your anger at your employer over here, we get it.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply. I do login each time through web.autocad.com, but there is no green banner. I asked the organisation for Autocad LT having used it before. I suspected they would get me a web based software since all other software is, but there were no comms regarding options. Indeed, I thought that to specify Autocad LT would get me all of the functionality I have had previously. I guess all I am asking is, 'is there a series of cost options you can choose from which have differing levels of functionality?'. If there is, I can ask for an upgrade, since what I have is clearly the free or the cheapest version.

There is no web-based CAD program that can replace your AutoCAD desktop experience. Maybe in 2-3-5-10-15 years from now, just not today.

You can not choose from different levels of functionality within the Web App. The AutoCAD Web App comes with one set of functions. There is only a difference on editing or no edit.

Edit/No Edit

Once you have a subscription, you have the full capabilities of the AutoCAD Web App (See: Why can't I use the editing tools? in FAQ). Only customers using a student license do not have access to the drawing and editing tools at this time.

Compare the functions (Web vs Desktop)

The AutoACAD Desktop App (AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT) runs on a full installation on your desktop PC and AutoCAD Web App runs in the browser. The browser functionality is limited compared to the desktop version.

Please have a look at the available functions here. As mentioned in the Web App help "Not all of the commands in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT are available in the AutoCAD web app". Feel free to compare :

• All commands AutoCAD Web App
• All commands AutoCAD Desktop App 

AutoCAD Web App already provides great functionality for an application that allows CAD editing from everywhere in a browser without installation. Over time the functionality will definitely enhance and I am already excited for everything that will come.

The difference between both applications is officially communicated and also their intention.

• AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT provide full functionality on a computer where the applications are installed.
• With the AutoCAD Web App you get core AutoCAD 2D drafting tools and commands with a simplified interface in a browser and all of this without an installation. 

Conclusion

If you need the full AutoCAD functionality, please contact your employer to request AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.

Since you are not seeing the Green "Extended Access Program.." banner, I suspect you are entitled to one of the AutoCAD products. You should check with your organization on what they have ordered.  You can login to https://manage.autodesk.com and see the products that are associated to your login. 

For AutoCAD web, there are no tiers of service available.  On the desktop products, there are two products, AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD.
