Could the information provided by @mwn help you and answer your question?
Currently using XREF is the way forward.
I just tested with two of the image formats mentioned by @mwn (BMP, PNG, GIF, JPG) and they worked for me. I suggest that they are inserted with a small height/width - I experienced the same on my side. When I checked I noticed that they are inserted with a unit value of 1 for width:

Please try the steps again and zoom in at the location where you selected the insertion point of your image. I suggest that you will find them.
Please select the whole image with a window selection and you will be able to adjust the size afterwards to the size you want.
