Can't create detail view using viewdetail command.

Hi,

In autocad mechanical 2018 I have my drawing geometry in model space.   2D circles and lines.  It appears that you can only use VIEWBASE if you have solids or surfaces.   So I use MVIEW instead to create a couple of views in my layout.  Now, I want to create a detail view from one of those views in the layout.  Whey I try this from the Detail view on the Layout Ribbon (VIEWDETAIL).  I get "Unable to perform the requested action.  This drawing was last edited with model documentation in a newer version of AutoCAD."   This doesn't make sense because we don't have any newer version of AutoCAD and I started this drawing from scratch.   Any ideas on what to check?    I am able to use the AMDETAIL command in Model space to get the detail view in layout, but that isn't as proper because it leaves the detail view circle in model space where only my part geometry should be.  So that route is undesirable.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank your for posting your question in the Forums. The VIEWDETAIL command is also meant for working with 3D solids and does not work with 2D geometry. The error is likely occurring because AutoCAD Mechanical is not able to find a suitable model to create the view from.

Please see the following Autodesk Knowledge Network (AKN) help file regarding the command:

VIEWDETAIL (Command)

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the clarification.   I guess when I see these commands and 3D in AutoCAD it doesn't register for me.   Designing in 3D is Inventor etc.   AutoCAD is purely 2D for us.    So I guess in my case I am restricted to AMDETAIL.
