Using orthogonal dimensioning

Hello,

Context:

I am new in Autocad Map 3D and I am testing the program to check if the program is suitable for my use case.

The main goal now is to use the dimension extension to create orthogonal dimensions.
The data I am currently using are SHP-files.

I have found these desriptions:
https://help.autodesk.com/view/MAP/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-5F36F322-A60B-48F5-B4FC-67F62D622DB0
https://help.autodesk.com/view/MAP/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-D0F7FBFA-CE9E-41FC-8CA7-48E421DC9643

Current status:
In the Industry Model explorer, I right-click the Dimension feature class and click Orthogonal Complete.
Then I am asked to specify the abscissa start.
I click on the first point of a building wall and the function ends.

In this forum discussion, someone has similar problems:
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-map-3d-forum/topobase-dimensioning-is-not-working/td-p/594577...

Up to this point, everything went quiete well. I had some problems regarding my SHP-files, but that is sorted out.
But to get ahead at this point, you obviously need to have progammed autocad yourself. Feature classes, oracle database, ....

Is it really so incredibly complex? Normal dimensions are very easy to use.

Hi @dbQEMGC

Please explain what you mean by  'Orthogonal Dimensioning.'

What you consider orthogonal dimensions might not be the same interpretation as those on this forum.

<<Your post sounds more like you're questioning coordinate systems and coordinate system transformations, not dimensioning. I could be wrong but that's what is sounds like.>>

I want to create a continuous dimensioning of an object. First, a survey helpline is selected so that all points of the object can be captured orthogonally starting from this line.

Subsequently, all dimensions that start at right angles from the main survey line (ordinate dimensions) are measured.

Map 3D has a build-in-feature to do  aligned or orthogonal dimensions as mentioned in the tutorial above. This extension has to be added in the infrastructure manager, which I did. You have to create a new file in the infrastructure manager and add your files to this industry model. Unfortunately I am a few inches away from using the extension, but I cant figure out why the function abruptly ends, when i am asked to pick the first point of the helpline.

Here is a tutorial from a german website. The function has to be opened from the industry model explorer.

  1. What does your cursor look like BEFORE you select first point of helpline?
  2. What does your cursor look like AFTER selecting that point?

Uploading screenshots of your cursor with the selected line (abscissa) in the background will be helpful.

As mentioned, in this topic, two people had similar problems.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-map-3d-forum/topobase-dimensioning-is-not-working/td-p/594577...

The solution in both cases was connected with the extend, whatever the extend is.
I have added a KBS System, so what is the extend?

I found the solution, I gave wrong map extent in the beginning, that was the reason the dimension didn't work. Does anybody know if it's possible to digitize only point or line features instead of using the orthogonal complete command from the industry model explorer? Emese"

If Your data is not in Your defined extent, dimension is not working. I use a metric system. I have to give the maximum and minimum X any Y coordinates in the extent. in the TB_INFO table You can check PARAM.DEFAULT_SPATIAL_MIN/MAX records. If You have this king of problem, You also have to update the sdo_geom_metadata"

Guys,

I need to admit that You guys were right.

The problem was coused by to small extents."

The question is, how to change the extend? Where can I find it or what is the function to open up the window?

I have also not added any feature classes, besides the feature classes which were added automatically by the activation of the dimensioning plugin. Do I need them? Please excuse me, my knowledge of MAP 3D is very basic.
