Map 3D ... Idea Station, what is the future of a product without improvement

Hi all,

just because I just got quite angry again ....

I'm waiting for years now to be able to do (normal) development based on Visual Studio ... as since Windows 8 it's not possible any more to run Map 3D in debug mode (acadmap.arx blocks all that). >>>more details about that issue<<<. I short words: new version of product (2017), new operating system (Windows 10, all together an environment as described in the system requirements) same bug (for many years now).

I reported that as bug, I placed this in the idea station, and all that is ignored by Autodesk for years now, not any response from them (ZERO response!). My conclusion: Autodesk ignores the Map 3D application developer, Autodesk is not interested in any application or tool the developers are working on and indirectly help Map 3D to be sold.

Now I looked to the list of current ideas in the idea station. I have not looked in every detail of every single idea, but my feeling is that I'm correct with that statement: not any of the ideas are implemented in 2017 ... am I right or is there any idea now working in Map 3D 2017 in the way the idea was placed (and I overlooked that)?

Please let me know if I'm wrong .... then I would be interested in which one is now working.

As developer Map 3D seems to be more and more a platform with the risk of beeing cancelled. Getting no real improvements for years now makes me quite sceptical about the future of this product.

Would love to get feedback to that!

If I'm correct (well, let's see the response here) my plan is to get someone from Autodesk (Product manager for Map 3D) to an WebCast session and let him/her describe what's going on, or better why is there nothing improved during the last years, why are all the ideas ignored, whatfor do they have an idea station if they ignore all content in it.

At least customers are paying for updates (with the subscription) and someone has to declare what the money of the last years was used for (and not for AutoCAD new functions, because the subscription yearly fee for Map 3D is more than for Vanilla AutoCAD)

I may be wrong, wish I am, but a few years ago the Map3D development team was moved over into the Civil3D team. IOW the C3D team is the one to make the improvements and add new features. Now with the layoffs or downsizing of the C3D group I think we have seen the last of anything new/improved in Map3D.  😞

Hi Alfred,

for Map there are 44 ideas, for Civil 900. You can have a long discussion why this is. Anyway - Civil IdeaStation has:

- 33 accepted,
- 5 comments requested,
- 12 solution provided,
- 27 implemented.

- 17 classified as duplicates

Map - zero / null / 0.

As 44 is a managable amount of ideas someone from Autodesk should go through them and accept/request comments, provide solutions or even starting implementing. Autodesk should make a move now if they are serious about Map development... When we see Autodesk is moving more user might be inclined to add further ideas. But what is the point of providing "ideas" if ADSK just ignores them.

Rob

That's not quite correct. Autodesk is saying they implemented 27-28 of the Idea Station ideas, but it's really only 12 of them.

Hello Mr Autodesk

As Alpha/Beta and MAP SME for France and as a MAP user since about 19 years,

<French Humour ON>

I appreciate your "very corporate / political / logical" answer...

<French Humour OFF>

I estimate that my 4 "top list" wishes (please look into the Ideas MAP forum) will not need A LOT OF EFFORT from Autodesk !?

Maybe I am wrong ?

Regards, Patrice (Always MAP user)

Hi Alex,

I'm thankful for your post and an agreement to the future with words is a good step.

But as others mentioned ... let us know what's going on, the Idea Station shows no response from Autodesk's side, bugs listed or sent via support or CER seems to be ignored and that makes a bad feeling.

As you mention you are from support I might know more than some others what's your position between customer (you are supporting) and product management (which make the decissions). I know that support people try to do all they can, but they are lost if the product manangement is not working in the same direction. And that is what my feeling is, there is no reaction from the management team about all that concerns.

Anyway, thank you for YOUR words! - alfred -

Hey guys,

Alfred, you’re right.  It is a challenge sometimes to be the mediator between the end users and management.  But, it’s a job I enjoy doing (Pat/Dave, French Humour really is OFF).

The truth is, We (all of us here at Autodesk) recognize that the Map 3D Idea Station has never realized its potential.  The question is how do we fix that?  I don’t have all the facts, so I’m not going to speculate.  However, I have talked with management and they are investigating multiple potential solutions.  Autodesk is a big moving machine and we really wish we could just flip a switch to fix this, but we can’t.

I understand you have all been patient on this matter and I’m sorry to have to ask that you continue to do so.  Our ultimate goal is NOT to have upset customers, and that is exactly what’s going on here.  We really do hear all of you.

If I get any news I’ll be sure to update the post.

Sincerely,

Alex Buller

Alex, nothing personnel or against you but you voice to the map product team has less of an effect than users in here. The map idea station is not what is broken, its the failure of the product team to stand up for the users and demand Autodesk to do something. Before there was the Idea Stations there was the Wish List on AUGI, that also wasn't listened to by Autodesk for Map3D. Want to see wghere Map3D is headed take a look at where Raster Design is today. Other than making it work on a 64 bit system the only "new feature" was the Ribbon back about 6 versions ago?

Hi Alex,

look to this new survey from Autodesk: >>>click<<< ... do you see Map 3D there? Again a sign of an "ending product"?

Like Murph wrote, that's nothing against you, but it shows how the product is handled internally at Autodesk. And users see that and think about the reasons why Map 3D is not listed while other AutoCAD based verticals are!!!

Hi all,

I also have 8-10 years of impression that Autodesk Map 3D does not develop to address user problems that create the initial maps - draw a maps. In the Feature (Object) classes for dwg, in the Object Data for 10 years or more errors are not corrected, no additions.
We saw that the Object Data can be used much better and more useful. We even started to solve these problems on their own. And we saw that the creation of the necessary commands for the Object Data does not require large ex...
And Idea Station a lot of requests for Object Data from different people.

Hello

1) YES YES

2) A nice feature which does not require a lot of works from the ACAD Team AND the MAP Team about the MAP ODs...

3) Be able to use ODs with QSELECT

4) Be able to use ODs with Dynamic Fields
