Keep WMS Connection From Plotting or APppearing in PS Viewport

Map 3d 2020/2021

I noticed that when you attach a Bing street map that it doesn't show up in a paper space viewport. I understand that you have to go into that viewport then turn the map on.

This actually is desirable, but I want to be able to do it for a WMS connection.

Background: We are attaching two, data intensive WFS connections for property and water distribution systems for our mid-size city. I want to keep one template file for the designers to use, but we're a large enough area that to attach the two WFS connections without filtering by area, the drawing becomes unmanageable because of the amount of data.

My plan is to have a "Bing-like" map in model space where the user can filter the WFS data by area, using the street map to zoom into the project area, then apply the filter.

But we don't want to automatically use the Bing map. We have our own GIS with all of the information I wantto add to the drawing as a lightweight connection so that I can show the whole city as a WMS connection. It works fine and doesn't bog the machine down for an hour reading feature classes or whatever.

But, on the plan sheets we are creating, once we've filtered our higher quality data to apply to the project area, the WMS data is redundant & unwanted. It's used solely to be able to pan and zoom to the project area until the more detailed data can be added by using the geographical area filter. I do not want the WMS connection to plot or be visible in PS.

I know in the task pane I can uncheck what I want to remove from the map. But I am setting up this drawing for your basic user and the less directions I have to give the better. I want the WMS connection to never show up or plot in a PS viewport. Is this possible? I see very little in the way of stylizing a WMS connection.

Thanks

Sounds confusing, I don't get it.

Why WMS and WFS? You mention both, why? Why not Bing Hybrid. It will allow you and the 'basic user' to zoom in and pan to the project area. Can you provide a like to your WMS/WFS?

Your GIS data, is it shapefile? Or geodatabase (gdb)? You didn't mention how you plan to introduce your GIS data to your drawing. You'll need a Feature Data Object (FDO) connection or use MapImport command. Is the GIS data the same data you wish to query (or filter).

There are 2, possibly 3, ways to do this and none will use WMS/WFS.

Hopefully I can clarify things.

We don't want to use Bing maps, but our in-house GIS.

The WMS is meant to be a lightweight data connection that will be used solely to navigate around the city to the project area. It has to be lightweight to keep the PC's from bogging down with an overload of data.

Once zoomed to the project area, an area filter is applied to the WFS connections. These connections are connected live to the GIS and contain the detailed data we want to show. If the WFS are not filtered the PC is overloaded and spins for up to an hour.

I can't style the WMS connection like I can the WFS connections or I would just go with that.

We have used shp files up till now, but they aren't live and someone has to keep them current. We want a live connection to the GIS.

Both WMS and WFS are open data, available and accessible to the public. Can you name you WMS and WFS sources? Or provide the links to both?

These connections are not public, you have to be logged into the city network, which is restricted.
