Issue with AutoCAD MAP mapexport after version 2015

Hi All.

We have been using .shp files to both import and export data and get them uploaded into our online portal.

In a nutshell.

Our SHP files consist of Point items, with attributes and Continuous items (lines or polylines) with attributes.

We import a .shp into Autocad map, perform our necessary edits and export into .shp again.

All was working well up to version 2015.

However after 2015 version this i seem to be having issues with the mapexport.

All our data is uploaded into an online portal where the integrity of the SHP is checked and the file is given a pass or fail.

I have tried using Map 2019 and Map 2024.

But when i export my files and import into our online portal i get the following errors which apply to every single point and line i have in my file:

 - This point item does not have 2D geometry

 - This continuous item does not have 2D geometry

 - This point item has more than 2 dimensions

 - This continuous item has more than 2 dimensions

Just to note, i can export the exact same file using an older version of AutoCAD MAP 2015 and it works perfectly.

So, there is something different in the newer versions which is causing this.

i have checked the following:

co-ordinate system, assigned as 2015 version as 'British National Grid'

Export settings are '2d geometry'

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem?

Hi @raahil

It's sounds like the procedure you're using isn't working.

Instead of explaining your old and new version of AutoCAD and describing the dimensions of your objects, explain the procedure you are using, step-by-step, to export the objects. Without looking at your data, the issue you've vaguely described sounds like you're not honoring feature classes e.g., point, line and polygon.

Uploading screenshots of the dialog windows will be helpful. For better and faster troubleshooting, upload your dwg and some sample data.

Hi @ChicagoLooper

Many thanks for your reply

I have attached a sample drawing where you can see the data I am working with.

To export the data I use the ‘mapexport’ command

  • Select ‘Esri shp’ from the dropdown
  • Select line
  • Manually select all objects
  • Go onto ‘data’ tab
  • Select ‘continuous’ under the object data tab
  • No further actions required on the ‘options’ tab
  • Export data

The above process is repeated for the point assets.

I have also attached sample exported data from both 2015 and 2019 versions.

To me both sets of data are identical but there must be a difference in the .shp or .shx on export.

If you require anything else do let me know

Thanks in advance

On tab Options, could you click button "Driver Option" to be sure than 2D Shape file is checked

HI @O_Eckmann

Thank you for your message.

I can confirm the driver option is set as 2 dimensional

thanks

Hi,

You could also check that files are identical between 2015 and newer version here (adapt according to version) :

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Autodesk AutoCAD Map 3D 2023\R24.2

Files to check : MAPIARX.INI, MAPEXPORT.INI and MAPSHP.INI

These 3 INI files contain several options to export/import data (command MAPEXPORT and MAPIMPORT).

I have checked between the 2.

MapExport there is very minor variation between the 2019 version and the 2015 version.

mapiarx and mapshp, both versions are identical

to clear any doubt i even copied the above 3 files from 2015 version and overwrite the ones in the 2019 version.

Unfortunately this did make any difference.

My biggest incline is the co-ordinate system.

in the 2015 version it is set to 'British National Grid (ORD SURV GB) - EPSG CODE: 27700'

this system is now obsolete in later versions, however i have tried all options in relation to British National Grid but no joy.

there is even an option to select older sytems (as per screenshot) where i can choose the same epsg code 27700 but even this don't work

Hi @raahil

Try this.

Give your Data Table a NEW name.

In the Planning and Analysis Workspace, go to Map Setup Tab=>Attribute Data Panel=>Define Object Data Icon=>Rename Table named POINT.

1001.PNG

Next perform MAPEXPORT again. Does renaming the Data Table make a difference when you export to shapefile?

@raahil

After renaming the Data Table I  exported your points again. Here's the table view of the exported shapefile.

Hi @raahil ,

Perhaps a very strange solution.

If you drag&drop your SHP 2015 in QGIS, you obtain a Point data type,

O_Eckmann_0-1698432571781.png

but with your SHP 2019, you obtain PointZ data type

O_Eckmann_1-1698432626796.png

Idem for Continuous : you obtain MultiLineString in 2015 and MultiLineStringZ with 2019.

I think that 2015 doesn't manage Z in geometry type and above version can produce Z geometry.

I think that point or line with Z not 0 are export as Z geom and point and line with Z = 0 are export as non Z geometry

It was very surprising that your DWG 2D data (Z = 0) are export as Z Geom.

I've made a screencast to try to understand.

I've export first time, without click and validate driver options as 2D, and I produce Z Geom. With exact same data and process, I just add a click on Driver option and select 2D (even if already selected), and OK to validate, Map 3D generates non Z geom.

So it means that 2D options aren't initialized until you click and validate driver option.

I've made test with Map 2019 and Map 2024 with same behavior.

I hope this can help you.

Hi @O_Eckmann

You are a genuis!!

Although its a weird solution, because the option of 2D is already selected. This does however solve the problem and the files now pass in the online portal!

Cannot thank you enough, thank you very much for this!
