I have just created a new drawing template for my team and am experiencing behaviour I haven't seen before. When I double-click on the template I expect a blank "Drawing 1.dwg" to open up, but it opens that along with a second tab and the .dwt itself.
I don't want to get drawn into talking about QNEW, default files, etc... There are specific reasons why I want it to work in this way for now. I'm in a new job so with a new PC setup, but in 12 years of CAD and many template creations I've never had this happen. I feel like there must just be a setting that blocks the .dwt from opening in this way? Does anyone know?

Which version of AutoCAD this is happening in?
What is the STARTUP variable equal to?
Where do you click on dwt, from the AutoCAD or from the file manager?
If from the file manager, the solution is probably in it and in Windows.
AutoCAD Map 3D 2020, Startup is 2. This happens with a double-click from file manager, not if opened through AutoCAD
Try STARTUP 0.
And then try mapping dwt to the AutoCAD DWG Launcher in the file manager.
I don 't have 2020, and for him I can 't test it myself.
The behavior is different in different versions.
I had previously changed to the DWG launcher with no effect, and changing the Startup to either 0 or 1 stopped the .dwt opening but I still got two tabs - Drawing 1.dwg and Drawing 2.dwg. However the two in combination solved the problem thanks!!
