Visretain error

thomas
Enthusiast
Enthusiast

I have a file with a few Xrefs. When Visretain = 1, the file freezes and crashes my entire computer. When I set Visretain = 0, the file saves quick and without any problem.

Is there a solution for this while keeping Visretain = 1? I need this setting on as I need to freeze and override Xref layers.

Thank you

Hi @thomas,

Are you sure the problem is not with the files? You can use Audit and Purge on each of the files to make sure that they are clean. Alternatively, you can use RECOVERALL to select the main file and it will Audit it and the associated XREFS.

If you like, you are welcome to attach the files here and I am happy to take a look to see if I can duplicate the problem.

I have not heard of a prior issue with VISRETAIN causing such an issue.

Thank you John for responding. I think it may be a problem with my system? These files were created by a consultant and they don't seem to have a problem with the Visretain setting. I am using AutoCAD LT 2016 with the latest patch and the consultants are using AutoCAD 2016.

I've eTransmitted the file, it's attached.

Hi @thomas

I found errors in both the titleblock file and the FP file.  See if they perform better for you now.

You might need to run audit and purge on all the files they have given you.

I've audited and purged these files but the ID-100 file now takes a very long time to save - about 5 minutes. I think it may be my AutoCAD install?

Hi @thomas, I would check all the drawing files that are referenced into this one.

It seems to load fine for me but closing was a bit slow. I tried an -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD and it seems quite a bit faster.

I tested the file on another computer and it saved much quicker. My computer was still freezing and crashing on save. I had to remove all AutoCAD products from my computer and reinstall everything, which has improved saving time. It's still much quicker when VISRETAIN is off, but it's not practical to do so.

Hi @thomas,

It sounds like progress has been made!

Try clearing out your User Profile Temp folder too. That might be REALLY full.

Hi @thomas,

You should find it here:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp

Ok, after many frustrating re-installs, I've discovered that the file crashes when trying to save with the Layers palette open. When the layers palette is closed, it saves fine, with about a 15 second delay

Hi @thomas,

Obviously this is not normal behavior.

Try this, if you create a new user account (Full Administrator) and logon with that account do you still have the problem?

And there are no error messages when it crashes? How about checking the Windows Event Logs too to see if records anything when the file crashes.

I am going to continue researching on my end.

Thanks for your patience on this.

I don't have full administrator access to my PC here so I can't try it out. I've checked the logs and there's nothing there I can see. I'm not too knowledgeable in this area.

When I save with the layer palette open, the entire computer slows to a crawl, then everything freezes and I can't click on any application. I can't even shut down. I have to hard reboot my PC.

Hi @thomas

The permissions issue might be a problem. I always recommend that users have full local administrator rights. What are your current rights? Can you ask to temporarily have your rights elevated to see if the problem continues?

So, while I research this more, have we eliminated the Visretain as the issue? It is really due to the Layer palette remaining open?

Can you tell me what kind of video card you have and which version of driver you are using?

Please also verify that you have SP1 installed as well as HotFix 1, 2, & 3

The issue is fine with Visretain off and layer palettes on. It even saves instantly.

Visretain on + visible layer palette = total destruction

Visretain on + layer palette off = 15 seconds to save

I'm using AMD Radeon HD 8570 version 03 April 16 16.150.2211.1001.

I'm on the latest version of 2017 now, downloaded today.

Hi @thomas,

I see that you are now on AutoCAD LT 2017 as of today. Did you migrate any of your old stuff or did you just do a clean install? Please go to Options and Graphics performance and turn off Hardware Acceleration and line smoothing to see if that improves the issue.

Please also let me know your user rights.

I have full admin local rights, and turning off hardware acceleration didn't make any difference. Machine still crashes
