Object preview not shown with move or copy

I have gone through the obvious fixes, DragMode is on auto, Audit didn't find an issue.  Hardware accelerator is on.  Updated the software, closed, restarted the computer.  This is happening as of today (did not happen earlier this week) and is affecting all files.

Thoughts?

on a related issue, (because maybe this will help), when I activate a viewport generally the view port line weight becomes heavier (default settings).  Now it's not.  So the issue appears to be happening with more than just move or copy (or mirror or rotate).
