Never used X-refs

Could somebody please explain how to use and why X-refs might be used. I've
read through the Help and I'm having a hard time understanding what the
advantages of X-refs are. From what I do understand, one advantage is that
you only have to make one correction to the parent drawing and then the
X-refed (child) drawing should update. In my case I never have to have more
than one drawing and I am the only draftperson in the company so nobody else
has to work on the same drawing.

Thanks

Mike

It's the other way around. Say you have a several drawing files that contain
a number of standard details; these details get updated from time to time,
for whatever reason, and you want to be sure that all drawings that use
those details will be automatically updated to reflect the latest standards.

This is accomplished by having each of the standard details in its own file,
which is then XRef'd into the drawing files in which they are used. If you
edit the detail, its appearance in every drawing into which it is XRef'd is
automatically updated.

Michael
One use for Xrefs is to reduce file size. Instead of having all information
in one file, you can break the file apart into logical separate files.
Another area where they come in handy is for title blocks. Xref in the
basic titleblock and company icon. Then insert a block with the necessary
attributes. My company recently changed names and logos, and with an Xref
for title blocks I only have to change one file, rather than 1,000's.
I keep equipment, furniture, architectural elements, different process
piping systems, etc in separate xrefs. Then I build a drawing from those
files and create my project specific drawings from there.
