AutoCAD on Mac OS X

I don't know what everyone else thinks, but IMHO, AutoCAD would be AMAZING
on OS X. The e-zine www.architosh.com has been working on an petition to
get AutoCAD (arguably the best CAD program available) ported to Mac OS X.
Look at the AutoCAD Petetion for Mac OS X page at
http://www.architosh.com/news/2002-02/2002b-0221-acad-index.phtml and make a
statement either for or against AutoCAD on the Mac.

To quote one of the pages:
"Apparently Autodesk has been monitoring the Architosh site for well over a
year and following our news of the Autocad for Mac OS X survey. We take this
as a serious sign that the company is not only watching the Mac CAD market
but taking some sort of interest in the Mac OS X platform."

This site is devoted to CAD on the Mac, therefore there will be NO AUTOCAD
USERS in the forums. Autodesk is monitoring the wrong place, perhaps it
should put up it's own poll at the website. Something along the lines of
"What platform(s) would you like to see AutoCAD on?" I'm sure there will be
a number of people that will vote for LINUX, but Mac OS X is based on UNIX
BSD. (According to the Apple Website, the next major release will be based
on UNIX BSD 4.4) Why support all the flavors of LINUX when UNIX can be
supported (via supporting Mac OS X)?

If I'm a lone voice in the crowd, let me get some attention for something
that many (including myself) are desiring. Since AutoCAD is currently
unavailable for the Mac OS, I'm looking for another CAD program. I know
that there are other people in my situation, let your local Autodesk
representative (your dealer) know about it. We choose AutoCAD because of
it's features, why can't we keep our CAD of choice, and change to the
platform that we choose as well?

Please, Please, Please. If you or anyone else that you know has any
interest in this happening, let your dealer know. Flood Autodesk's HQ with
letters (real paper mail). Let everyone know. I watched a round table
discussion with AutoDesk CEO Carol Bartz, and she stated the benefits of sup
porting a single platform. I'm not trying to say that there is no benefit
to such a business strategy, but inprovement thru diversity should be
treated as an axiom.

Pass this around.

In Christ Jesus...
Craig

You can run AutoCAD on a MAC: you just need a very decent recent MAC PC, OS,
and a Windows emulator. Lots of people doing it with great success. Browse
or Search the entire site at http://discussion.autodesk.com for ideas and
tips.

I've looked at the option of running AutoCAD under VPC, but I'm concerned
about the performance hit. Granted I con't be doing 3D work, generating
renderings, or other processor intensive tasks. But I have been unable to
find benchmarks for running AutoCAD under VPC. My preference would be to
run AC natively under OS X.

The only limitation with VPC is you need lots of RAM, and a recent
processor, and plenty of HD space to spare. VPC current version only too.
Lots of Graphics shops have it set up that way, works fine. Like you said
though, not much 3D.

When native is not an option, go virtual 😉

Linux is going that way too: check out www.lindows.com for details.

Not an easy port, IMO. From what I've seen while programming for AutoCAD
2000+, it is very heavily oriented to Microsoft VC++, Windows API and data
structures. One big thing I observed was that the Acad modules actually
check for valid Windows Portable Excutable formats in the application files,
and will not run if the format is not exactly right. I'm not sure what OS X
uses as application files, but if it is ELF or other UNIX format, I don't
think Autocad will handle it.
