Autocad LT 2019 does not open .dwg files

Hi ive been experiencing this problem, when mu autocad LT 2019 is open with a basic drawing.dwg, SDI = 1, and when i want to open another file from a folder in windows, double clicking on the .dwg does not do anything.

I have tried to open with dwg launcher, with other versions of autocad LT (2018 and 2017) and still nothing happens. THe only way to open multiple drawing is to use file > open within each autocad instance.

This is annoying since i am used to work with multiple autocad instances.

I have recorded a video:

Roll back to LT2018 until LT2019 is repaired, it appears to be buggy on many fronts.

HI @andzejs_poprockis,

Do you really want AutoCAD to open separate instances for each drawing? Please try setting SDI=0 and then restart your computer. Does that enable the functionality for which you are looking?

For one, some dwg file are broken and sometimes autocad crashes, therefore i dont trust SDI=0. Because i have lost precious work because of that.

And yeah im waiting for the patch for 2019LT

Hi @andzejs_poprockis,

I have confirmed this behavior in both LT and full AutoCAD 2019. I will bring this issue to the team for further investigation.

SDI=1 is the preferred method to efficiently work with different drawings at the same time. What is the status on Autodesk fixing AutoCAD 2019, so it opens multiple AutoCAD sessions from Windows explorer when SDI=1 similar to AutoCAD 2018, 2017 and 2016?

Autodesk does not pre-announce release dates for anything: that's why you have the Desktop App, it will notify you when an update is available.

Hi @Anonymous, Thank you for your patience in this conversation. I verified with Development that this is working as designed. Apparently three are some issues with the new version of Windows and conflicting SDI status.  Therefore, it has essentially been removed from the application.  The only reason the variable still exists is because of a certain workflow in AutoCAD Electrical.  So while you can still set SDI=1, you will find in current product that it will only open one AutoCAD session at a time.

So AutoCAD has no plans to fix this? It's still possible to open multiple instances with SDI=1 you just have to open each AutoCAD instances separately and then use file > open to get to the files you want. The only bug is that it no longer lets you open files from the file explorer and they aren't going to fix this because they don't see the benefit of multiple instances? Using multiple instances is a huge part of my work and seeing them completely neglect it over such a small bug is distressing.

I hope they fix this bug or i will not be upgrading. i have multiple monitors and like to look at other jobs and compare.

Interesting way to fix issues with SDI on newer Windows Versions, but Previuous version on the same OS works perfekt.
So it is only a 2019 problem..

Now, we have a real SDI rofl.

But without jokes: Can you explain more in detail or better can you ask for an example of issue with multiple session with SDI in 2019?

I like to replicate the one example issue before i write workarounds in public (and some people lost her work because of the workaround).

If have multiple sdi sessions, what i have to do to get trouble with them?

Thx Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Let me see if i can get some more information from Development. My initial understanding is that changes in the way Windows is architected made this decision preferable.

Hi!

Is there some solution for this, jet? If multiple DWG files are needed on seperate instances of AutoCAD 2019, is it possible to open them with doubleclicking the file?

It is possible, but without more infos about the problems with sdi in newer versions (the reason why adesk disabled that) i don't like to propulate a workaround.
Some people will use them and if the problem is a silent killer it could possible to destroy the projects/files!?
I do not want to help destroying files, perhaps @john.vellek post more informations in future(or mail)?

Hi @cadffm,

I have not been able yet to get any more information on this situation from development.  I started doing a little Internet searching as well but so far I have not been able to discover much.

I suggest that if the reason SDI is preferred is to prevent crashing, then a harder look to why the crashes occur is likely more important.

Hi there!

I have actually the opposite issue. I would like to open the files in the same instance, in tabs. But I cannot associate the dwg files to the AutoCAD DWG launcher. It appears a window with the legend Windows cannot find C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2019\acad.exe

Hi @festradat,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  Can you make a quick Screencast to show how you are doing this process? I have attached a video to show it from my side.

Do you have more than one version of AutoCAD installed on your computer? Is it installed in the default location?

Screencast will be displayed here after you click Post.

Hi Jon!

Actually, I have the dwg files associated to AutoCAD Launcher, and the autocad icon doesn't display on those files.

I think my issue comes from the REGEDIT. Not sure if I have the correct parameters. I have to manually update the "OpenLaunch" and "PrintLaunch".

I had the DWG TrueView installed but I uninstalled before installing the AutoCAD. ¿Could that be also the issue?

Thanks!
