Hatch to current layer

I'm trying to place the hatch into the current layer. "Current Layer" is selected in the hatch window, but it proceeds to place the hatch onto Layer 0.

What is your HPLAYER variable set to? Look up usage in HELP and set it the way you need.

My HPLAYER value is set at 0, but I don't know what that means.

0 means... "layer 0"

Did you get a chance to look up the HPLAYER variable in HELP? it explains how to set to to default to your current layer. Do so now, its a good learning moment.

When I enter the command "HPLAYER" this is what I see:

HPLAYER Enter new value for HPLAYER, or . for use current <"0">:

What do I enter to solve my issue?

Start HPLAYER and push the magic button.

F1 brings up the Autocad HELP. I've done this. This is what I see.

HPLAYER (System Variable)

Specifies a default layer for new hatches and files.

Type: String

Saved in: Drawing

Initial value: use current

Values other than *.* (use current) value override the current layer (CLAYER).

How do I apply this info to address the issue?

Let's break down the commandline response:

"Enter new value for HPLAYER" is asking you to put in a new value: so what should you put in? Let's look at the second part o the sentence

", or . for use current" is offering up that you enter . (a period or a dot or whatever you want) to set it to use the "current" layer.

Lastly, it shows in quotes "0", this is where AutoCAd is showing you what you have set right now, namely the layer 0 (zero).

in HELP, when you look up HPLAYER command it expands the description in more detail and says:

"Values other than the "." (use current) value override the current layer (CLAYER Command)."

. means use current layer.

At this point, the easiest thing to do is to go ahead and let Autocad place the hatch into whatever layer it wants and then go back and do a CHPROP to change the layer. I'm not a power user of Autocad so maybe I wasn't conveying my issue effectively.

Okay. I get it now. Problem solved. Now it makes sense. I just needed to step back re-read the HELP info.

The solution provided works-but for heavens sake why did it take 12 emails to get a solution?

Comments like 'press the magic button' are not helpful. Just say what the answer is!!!!
