Add attribute to exsting block to attribute editor shows on double click

I can create an attribute and include it in my selection when creating a block.  When I double click on the block it then comes up with Enhanced Attribute Editor which lets me edit the attribute.

I have a complex dynamic block I now want to add an attribute to.  I can do this, but when I double click on the block, it opens the Edit Block Definition window.

How can I change this so it opens the Attribute Editor?  I suspect I'm missing something fundamental!

Please post a drawing with the block in it so we can have a look. That behaviour sounds a bit odd.
