Unable to set transparency according to layer

Unable to set transparency according to layer

So just for a background, I'm working in model space and transparency is enabled in the drawing. I am unable to assign a specific transparency to an entire layer through the layer properties manager. The option is available and I am able to select any transparency level, however, the setting seems to have no effect on the linework on that layer. Setting transparency of an individual item works just fine. I have tried regenerating the drawing which doesn't help either. I'm not talking about plot transparency - I'm only attempting to change how the items on a specific layer appear transparent on screen.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi,

select one of the entities on that layer, open the property window (<CTRL><F1>) and verify the setting "transparency" of that object. If it is not "byLayer" then that is the reason. If that does not help then please upload the drawing with some of that entities.

Excellent point. I had a drawing where all new objects were drawn at "0" transparency. I thought that was the default (ByLayer) setting. Turns out that literally "ByLayer" is default and someone at the office changed it to "0" along the way. I just typed in "ByLayer" in the transparency box of the Properties pallette and that solved the problem.

Thanks for the help Alfred!

I have the same issue but with a twist. Yesterday, I drew up a model that had a few layers with transparency set to greater than 0. All was well with the world. Anything I drew on those layers assumed the corresponding value. Then I went home for the night and came back to work this morning. Suddenly nothing i drew would assume any transparency. Checking the properties, I noticed trans was set to 0 instead of ByLayer. Changing it there would fix the issue but I still have the problem of any new objects are created with trans set to 0 instead of ByLayer. Yesterday that was not the case. How do I get newly created objects to have trans to ByLayer so I don't have to change each and every object I draw?

Hi,

>> Suddenly nothing i drew would assume any transparency

most probably you have saved to an old DWG-format.

Please make sure that (in _OPTIONS) you do NOT save back to an older dwg-format, otherwise you might lose settings and/or geometry.

I don't know what you mean by that. I saved it the same way i always save my progress... click the little save icon on the top left.

Hi,

Within command _OPTIONS you can define the default format AutoCAD should use to save your file.

When you start command _OPTIONS, change to tab Open and Save ... what file format have you defined here?

You might also upload your dwg-file so we can look into the format.

The option is to save as 2018 dwg. I'm not sure what your getting at. I know what the problem is... Newly created objects, for some reason, have the transparency set to 0 instead of "ByLayer". Does anyone know how to change that default?

I more vigorous google search found the answer. CETRANSPARENCY. It was set to "0". I changed it to ByLayer and problem solved

Seems like I misread your message.

Can you verify variable CETRANSPARENCY ... is it set to "byLayer", of not change it.

Does that answer your question?
