Unable to connect the lines into 1 polyline

Hi

I am a beginner. Currently i am editing a building layout. At the moment, I want to join the lines below into 1 polyline (door and hinge), so i can easily move it about. But the lines just won't join. I have used both the pedit->join and join command but the lines won't create into 1 polyline. Somehow the hinge, door and door arc is converted into separate polylines. Please help. Thanks.

You would be better off converting the entities into a block.  Then you can easily copy or insert as needed to scale.  Those entities aren't typical made into one polyline.  Multiple polygons made in a block is the way to go.

BLOCK (internal to the current file) or WBLOCK (as an external dwg you can use in other files).

While I agree the best way to do this is turn the entities into a block by typing B <enter> on the command line selecting the objects and giving it a name and a basepoint. Polylines often can't be joined if they are drawn at different elevations. You can check the elevations of the lines by selecting them, typing properties on the Command line and looking at the elevation line if it says Varies they are at different elevations. Setting this to 0.000 should do it.

I too recommend the BLOCK method. That would be standard best practice in this case.

But, just so you know for future reference, I imagine the reason they won't all join together is because there are too many ends or the ends do not connect.

For polylines to JOIN, they must meet end to end. Also, only two end vertices can join. So if you have 3 ends meeting, only two will join.

Welcome to AutoCAD.

Hello @awg7340

<<….I want to join the lines below into 1 polyline….>>

Your door arc doesn’t sound like it’s a polyline.

Select an individual arc-swing and view its properties. If the description at the top of the Properties Palette displays ARC then you can’t join that arc to a polyline. It’s like 4th grade algebra. You can add 2x and 3x but you can’t add 2x and 4y.

If the swing is really an arc, your option is limited to replacing it with a ‘curve’ created by using the arc option within the PLINE command.

Although a polyline may be an arc, not all arcs are polylines.

As you draw your polyline, take a look at the command line. It gives you options to draw an arc, or a section with an arc, while executing PLINE. You may even switch from arc to p-line, and vice versa, during p-line creation.

As other forum members have already mentioned, you may also create a block, with an insertion point, of course,  which will group both the door and swing arc into a single entity.

I have checked the elevations. They are all 0.0000 at z-axis.

I have checked the lines one by one and I think they are connected. I have also turned OSNAP on when connecting the lines. As mentioned previously, I am not drawing from scratch. I just edit the drawing. Copying the lines (doors) at base and fit them at another location. Then i explode them to connect with the surrounding area. After exploding and adjust the lines, i tried to turn them back to polyline. But it's not working.

@awg7340,

I too agree with the others that a block would be a better solution.

However, if you would like to solve the mystery of why the objects will not join into a polyline, please post the sample drawing.

To discover the potential of blocks, explore the Tool Palette > Architectural tab > Door. Once placed in a drawing, select the block and then examine what all of the grips can do.

Jerry

Thanks for the reply.

Yea. There's actually a block on this door. I found it after taking your suggestion to open the block icon in the tools palette. It seems the block was not defined since i copied the layout from another drawing. I redefined the block using the block command and insert it again using the insert command. Looks like it's settled. I really appreciate the advices here and how fast they came in since I am running out of time. Thanks very much everybody.
